Description: (Ref.BB3) Pale blue cloth boards with gilt and black stamped illustration to centre front and gilt spine titles and decoration. Greyed top edge. Yellowed foredge. One or two small marks and scuffs to boards but generally good and bright. Slight rubbing to head and heel. Foxing to prelims and main title page else main contents are generally good and unmarked. Nice copy.

Description: First edition, no dust wrapper. Blue boards with gilt lettering on the spine. Covers are well thumbed and rubbed, some fading and white marks. Head and tail of spine bumped, corners smooth and bear heavy some wear. Corners bumped. Spine lightly sunned. Pastedowns, free endpapers and title pages bear moderate discolouration, so too the occasional page throughout. Previous owner's inscription upon front free endpaper reads: "To Bessy, Wishing her a Happy Birthday, from Edith 7-4-1923". Pages throughout are discoloured due to age. Page edges well thumbed, discoloured and lightly rubbed. Binding split at the front pastedown, else neat. Previous bookseller's sticker on tail of pastedown: Blake's Busy Book Bizaar, Albury, NSW. Description: 1917 First Edition. Size octavo, 316 pages. Blue cloth covered boards with illustrated paper title label to the front cover, red titles to the spine. Conditon very good, corners and spine edges rubbed, cloth split along rear hinge, spine sunned, hinges cracked, end-papers toned, gift inscription to front end-paper, a couple of spots to first and last few pages, pages slightly toned, light marks to margins of a couple of pages, else contents clean. With illustrations by H. M. Brock; black and white line illustration chapter headings and full page plates on glossy paper including colour frontispiece. Written by A. A. Milne, before any of the Winnie-the-Pooh books, during the First World War, his first Children's book. Though as his dedication to his wife states it is not his book, but theirs, his wife had first suggested he "write a little play for yourself and the Colonel's children to act" and that she had written down the ideas that came in to his head during the evenings after his day's work with the 4th Royal Warwickshire Regiment was over, and he goes on to dedicate the book to the Officers and Men of the Regiment. Pages are unmarked by previous owners, though scattered pages are lightly foxed. Light wear to cloth at spine ends and corners. Binding is tight. Both hinges are cracked, but holding. Spine has moderate lean. Boards are scuffed and rubbed, soiled, and worn along edges, spine ends and corners. Spine is soiled and guilt title is faded. Paper label on front cover is lightly stained and worn. Corners are well bumped and cloth is frayed. Text block is soiled. No dust jacket. Pictures available upon request.

Color frontispiece and black and white illustrations by H. M. Brock. Inscribed ' To Mabel. With love From A.A.M. ' Milne's mother-in-law was named Mabel. While nothing declares this to be her copy, we can find no one else in the standard Milne biographical references who were A) named Mabel and B) likely in the slightest to receive a book from Milne inscribed with love.In any event, an exceptionally intimate inscription from Milne. A very good copy with some wear to the edges and spine ends of the cloth and some offsetting to the endsheets.
