Description: 230pp. Octavo [20.5 cm] Blue cloth over boards, with title stamped in silver on spine. The covers are cocked and the rear board is stained. Other than the markings to the endpages, the pages are clean. In a worn dust jacket, lined with tape and paper strips at the edges (the paper strips are not visible, as they are lining the reverse of the jacket). An early novel from the author of "Big Rock Candy Mountain" and the Pulitzer Prize-winning "Angle of Repose." Originally serialized in Redbook under the title "Clash by Night."

Description: First edition, hardcover, Review Copy stamp to the first free end page, the book has a slight skew to the binding, light bumps to the spine ends, faint sunning to the spine, and foxing to the edges of the text block and a few of the pages. Overall, a solid, tight, Very Good copy in a like, unclipped dust jacket, which has bumps with tiny chips and thin creases to the spine ends and corners, mild wear along the edges and folds, slight sunning to the spine, and some rubbing to the covers with faint smudging and foxing to the back. The jacket is wrapped in Mylar, and additional images are available by request.

Edgewear. Inscribed by author, "For Ted and Kay Morrison, from their friend Wallace Stegner Christmas, 1939". Mr. Morrison was Stegner's tennis partner as well as director of Harvard's creative writing program. He was also director of the legendary Breadloaf Writers Conference for many years. Kay was Robert Frost's secretary. Wonderful association copy, as it was Morrison who hired Stegner away from Wisconsin and gave him his first job at Harvard. 231 pp.
