Description: We list the 1957 date stated to copyright page -- the only date found -- because the ABE computers request a date. However, this is a LATER, FACSIMILE, REPLICA REPRINT, vintage unknown. An Online seller peddled this to us as a "Viking Press 1957" edition, which of course it is not, despite what we find printed to the title page. (Caveat emptor out there -- most of them don't even care.) The boards of the 1957 Vikings were covered in black cloth; this thing has black PAPER-covered boards. True 1957 Viking printings bore a red topstain; this thing shows NO topstain. Nor are we sure who printed this volume -- we can't find the logo of the First Edition Library, or of any other known purveyor of acknowledged facsimiles. That said, we offer here a lovely, "fine" facsimile reproduction of the 1957 Viking first printing of "On the Road," with NO dust jacket. Given that true firsts can now run $2,000 to $5,000 or more, this kind of handsome facsimile does have some value -- we just think whoever printed this one should have acknowledged who they were and what they were up to. 310 pp. Reduced from $120.

About the design and materials used: The book is bound in finest black goatskin supplied by Harmatan and Oakridge, one of the finest suppliers of leather in Europe. The spine shows Jack Kerouac in white letters. The solander case in lined with black felt so that the books leather will not rub against a hard surface. The books top edge has been silvered. Marbled endpapers have been inserted with a design reminiscent of Edvard Munchs The Scream, somewhat appropriate given Kerouacs biography. The original cheque, is filled in by hand by Kerouac for the amount of USD 194.50 to the order of Maceys and signed by him. The date is 28 May 1958 and most likely the funds came from the royaltites of On the Road which became a bestseller. Perhaps Jack bought his mother a kitchen appliance with this cheque. Condition: the book presents in fine condition with no previous owners names or scribbles throughout. An occasional stain on some of the pages only pronouces the authenticity of the book from 1957. Notwithstanding it is indeed signed & as such not to be toyed with as there are only a handful of really top-of-mind modern titles & right beside Catcher & Mockingbird sits OTR or is it the other way round? The dustwrapper is very good or better having been professionally restored with work done primarily at the spine heel & crown. An extremely good copy.

And when this book was published, Kerouac was so overwhelmed by the publicity he received that he went into self-imposed exile with his mother. Hence, signed copies in any printing of the legendary Beat author's best-known work are rather scarce.
