Description: First edition, with dust wrapper. Light blue boards with gilt lettering on the spine and front cover. Boards bear great swathes of white discolouration. Board edges are rubbed and therefore discoloured. Head and tail of spine bumped. Heavy discolouration, foxing and staining of page edges, more so at the head edge. Fore edge deckled. Head edge stained red. Binding is neat and tidy. Signs of use and foxing on free endpapers, pastedowns and half-title page, along side some discolouration. Previous bookseller's stamp on tail of front free endpaper. Pages are lightly browned, else book is in good condition. Dustwrapper is well rubbed and discoloured, particularly at the edges. Back cover bears scratches and some scuff marks. Large chip at tail edge, towards spine. Some creasing, small tears and chips along the edges. Spine sunned. Price clipped, and corners clipped too, else in fair condition. *We always describe the faults of our books meticulously; they usually present better than they sound.

In the midst of the Depression, a young couple flee the city to a farm, where they and others establish a collective. The true first edition of FDR's treatise on the New Deal, with typos on pages X and 162.

Description: A dummy copy with half-title, title page with copyright on verso, a printed explanatory page, an excerpt from Chapter 7, a printed statement of upcoming publication, and several pages of order forms. The bulk of the full-sized book is composed of blank pages. The front endpaper contains a written statement initialed "JB" and dated 1 April 1934 stating the book is an "Autographed Copy." Perhaps an April Fool's joke? Without the number "1" on the copyright page and the front dustwrapper flap, both previously believed to be points for the first printing but which should now be questioned as this copy came out before the book was officially published. Dust jacket differs from trade edition with blurb on front flap noting: "The most significant book of the year," which was later changed to "This book by the President of the United States is required reading for every citizen." This edition is not listed in Halter. The only known copy with the scarce dust jacket. Provenance: Originally sold by Swann Auctions in 1952 to Mr. Frederick B. Adams Jr, the director of the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York City and respected bibliophile. At the time of publication, only 12 advance review copies were produced by The John Day Company, with 7 going to reviewers and the remaining going to salesman for the company. Early errors were corrected in pencil by the publishers, which this copy contains. (Halter T-584) (Colophon, Number 4, Volume 1, PP 497) An exceptionally scarce copy of On Our Way, with only this copy being sold publicly since its publication. According to President Roosevelt, On Our Way contains the first correct version of his historic inaugural address from 1933. This copy belonged to Frederick B. Adams, who used it to develop his bibliographic descriptions and future articles. Provenance: The Library of Frederick B. Adams Jr, November 2001.

Schrider (née Van Gasken), served in the White House from 1932-1962, working in various positions within the Civil Service Department. She died at the age of 98 in 2004.

Very good in a very good dust jacket, and near fine in a very good dust jacket. Housed together in a custom blue cloth slipcase, cloth chemise with leather label for each volume. First edition of each title, both inscribed to Frederick Holbein at Christmas by Roosevelt the year each was published. In LOOKING FORWARD the newly inaugurated president reflects on the events leading to the Great Depression and the way forward out of the crisis. ON OUR WAY is the sequel volume, presenting Roosevelt's personal account of the first year of his administration and the ideals of the New Deal. LOOKING FORWARD is a fifth printing, while ON OUR WAY appears to be a first printing.
