Robert Graves. On English Poetry Being an Irregular Approach to the Psychology of This Art, from Evidence Mainly Subjective. William Heinemann, London, 1922.

Price: US$179.59 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: The first edition of Robert Grave's interesting collection of essays 'On English Poetry'. The first edition of this work. This binding is the re-issued binding as both Robert Graves and the designed, William Nicholson, disliked the original yellow design. This edition is the first issue of the first edition according to the Higginson's Robert Graves bibliography. The issue points shared with the first issue are; 'that' instead of 'than that' on page thirty-three, line two from the chapter break, and 'have' instead of 'how' on page one-hundred and forty-five, line five. The binder's stub preceding the title-page also indicates that the half-title is a cancel, as called for in the first issue. 'On English Poetry' is a collection of sixty, sometimes controversial, essays on poetry. Included are 'The Nine Muses', 'The Gadding Vine', 'La Bella Dame Sans Merci', 'Limitations', 'The Classical and Romantic Ideas', 'On Writing Musically', 'Asking Advice', 'Poetry as Labour', and more. Robert Graves was an English poet, best known for his translation and interpretations of Greek Myths, and for his World War I memoir, 'Goodbye to All That'. In the original publisher's paper covered boards. Externally, smart. slight rubbing to the joints and to the head and tail of the spine. Very light bumping to the extremities. Internally, generally firmly bound, though slightly strained in one place. Pages are bright and clean. Fine
