Condition: Very Good

Description: "Man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated." Hemingway's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the solitary Santiago and his struggle to boat his marlin. Arguably Hemingway's most popular novel, and his last sustained work of fiction in his lifetime. On the bestseller list for half a year, the book not only silenced critics who had lambasted his work, but earned its author the 1953 Pulitzer Price and the 1954 Nobel Prize for Literature. Ernest Miller Hemingway (1899–1961) was an American novelist, short-story writer, and journalist. His economical and understated style—which he termed the iceberg theory—had a strong influence on 20th-century fiction, while his adventurous lifestyle and public image brought him admiration from later generations. The novel was made into a 1958 American adventure drama film directed by John Sturges and starring Spencer Tracy. The screenplay was written by Peter Viertel. Dimitri Tiomkin won the Academy Award for Best Original Score for his work on the film. The film was also nominated for Best Color Cinematography (Howe) and Best Actor (Tracy). At least two more film versions have been made. Commercial success offered Scribner the luxury to try innovative methods to sell additional copies of this title. This copy, (at 1st glance the same size and DJ as a 1st edition) was marked and promoted as from the "College Edition." Under 0.5% of the copies for sell are described as College Editions. Hardcover has powder blue cardboard covers with blue cloth spine, gold designs stamped into covers and lettering on spine, in an As New Dust Jacket. Rear cover is stamped College Edition, front cover has a marlin and faux Hemmingway signature. Jacket is aqua blue with blue ink. Front shows a scene with Santiago and the Marlin battling on the open sea. Unclipped jacket shows no price, mentions both the '54 Nobel & '53 Pulitzer prizes, mentions "Special Student Edition" & "College Department", while promoting other titles from Scribner for sale. Hemingway, Ernest. The Old Man and The Sea (True First Edition, First Printing, with A and Colophon, in Fine facsimile 1st dust jacket and Fine slipcase). Charles Scribner's Sons, 1952.

Price: US$600.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: This is a solid, true first edition, first printing, with "A" and colophon on copyright page. We felt it needed to be protected, so we've included a fine facsimile dust jacket and a fine slipcase, both from the First Edition Library. The light blue boards are still sharp on the corners with solid hinges. The rear board shows only the very lightest of wear at the extremities (quite minimal); the front board shows a very light, angled discoloration of maybe two square inches (but hard to tell; see photo), surrounding a small brown dot, an inch above the author's blindstamped name. The author's first name in silver on the spine is heavily worn, while some notable white dots mark the bottom of the otherwise decent spine. No markings nor tears within the text; no book plates or other such stickers. The front flyleaf has a very small dog ear that has been flattened, and the entire page was once folded, showing a light crease from top to bottom--this line having flattened itself well over the years! The leaves are cream-colored evenly throughout, though we're not sure if they were white or cream to begin with! Overall, a solid, desirable example! Please ask for more photos, if needed. (Note: We did not show the dj nor slipcase in the photo, lest someone glance over it, believing it was a reprint that we were listing. You may request same, if you wish.)

Description: *Winner of the Pulitzer Prize* "A beautiful tale, awash in the seasalt and sweat, bait and beer of the Havana coast. It tells a fundamental human truth: in a volatile world, from our first breath to our last wish, through triumphs and pitfalls both trivial and profound, what sustains us, ultimately, is hope." --The Guardian The last of his novels Ernest Hemingway saw published, The Old Man and the Sea has proved itself to be one of the most enduring works of American fiction. The story of a down-on-his-luck Cuban fisherman and his supreme ordeal--a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream--has been cherished by generations of readers. Hemingway takes the timeless themes of courage in the face of adversity and personal triumph won from loss and transforms them into a magnificent twentieth-century classic. First published in 1952, this hugely popular tale confirmed his power and presence in the literary world and played a large part in his winning the 1954 Nobel Prize in Literature. First Edition of Hemingway's most famous novel. Has both Scribner's A and seal. Book Condition: VG-. DJ Condition: G. Dust Jacket is worn with minor losses at both spine and front cover (see photos). Price: US$3816.07 + shipping

Description: First edition, first printing, in the first issue jacket, with the flaps printed in brown and no mention of Hemingway's Pulitzer or Nobel Prize on the rear panel. Hemingway's final work of fiction, The Old Man and the Sea won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1953 and was cited by the Nobel Committee in their awarding of Hemingway's Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. Previously, much has been made of the colour tint on the rear panel portrait by Lee Samuels. Grissom, however, refutes Hanneman's earlier assertion that the blue tinted photograph on the rear panel predates the olive tint, noting, "the identification of a first-printing jacket does not require identifying ambiguous rear-jacket colours: it is the brown printing on the flaps and rear panel that identify the first-printing Scribner's jacket". Grissom A24.1.a; Hanneman 24a. Octavo. Original light blue calico-grain cloth, spine lettered in silver, author's signature to front cover in blind. With dust jacket. Boards slightly bowed, a couple of small marks to front cover, extremities lightly rubbed, contents clean; jacket price-clipped, spine slightly toned, extremities lightly creased, short closed tear to foot of rear panel neatly repaired: a very good copy in very good jacket.

Description: First edition of Hemingway's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and one of his most famous works. Octavo, original blue cloth. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Photograph of Hemingway by Lee Samuels. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell slipcase. An exceptional example. Upon its publication in 1952 by Charles Scribner's Sons, The Old Man and the Sea was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction the following year and was cited by the Nobel Committee as contributing to the awarding of the Nobel Prize in Literature to Hemingway in 1954. The novel reinvigorated Hemingway's literary reputation. It initiated a reexamination of his entire body of work. The novel was received with such alacrity, that it restored many readers' confidence in Hemingway's capability as an author. Indeed, the publisher even wrote on an early dust jacket, calling the novel a "new classic," and it was compared by many critics to such revered works as William Faulkner's "The Bear" and Herman Melville's Moby-Dick.

Cloth a little faded, just beginning to fray at spine ends, a couple of tiny faint stains to edges, contents clean; jacket spine and edges lightly toned and sunned, minimal rubbing to extremities, unclipped, front panel bright: a very good copy in near-fine jacket.

The old man's name is Santiago. For weeks no fish has come to bite the bait of his lines, but he does not despair and for the eighty-fifth time takes to the sea. At dawn, he goes far out to sea; at noon, he hooks a big fish. The fight is bitter, because the animal moves in depth and drags the boat; the hours pass and the night without anything to interrupt this race during which the two adversaries give the best of themselves. They are not enemies, but to kill or to be killed is in the natural order of the world of the sea [.] For having known how to refuse defeat, he has enriched the community forever, and young and old, who were waiting for him, now know why they will admire him, who knew, in solitude, how to make models of their pain and their hope [.] The success of this book is in the purely literary beauty of the writ
