Description: The book has a spine lean and there is bumping and a little rubbing to the corners but the boards are otherwise unmarked. Page edges a little browned with a small brown mark to the fore edges. The front free endpaper has a trace of a price in pencil. There are a few light brown spots on the pages which are otherwise clean and unmarked. The jacket has quite heavy edge chipping. The front panel has a one inch closed tear at the top which has been repaired to the reverse, there are two other half-inch closed tears to the top edge and there is a one and a half inch closed tear to the bottom right corner next to the front flap. The spine has a quarter-inch hole in the surface a third of the way up, a one inch closed tear at the top next to the rear panel and chipping with some loss at the bottom. The rear panel is browned and there is browning along the top edges of the flaps. Jacket design by Biro. First printing.

This is the 2nd volume of Evelyn Waugh's great World War II trilogy, Sword of Honour. At the time of publishing Waugh had yet to settle on the triology notion, and there is no suggestion that the series has a name. The blurb on the front flap reads: ''Officers and Gentlemen completes Men at Arms' writes Evelyn Waugh. 'I thought at first that the story would run into three volumes. I find that two will do the trick. If I keep my faculties I hope to follow the fortunes of the characters through the whole of their war, but these first two books constitute a whole.'' So Waugh intended to keep writing, but did not quite think he was writing a named series.
