Description: First edition, 1896. One of the Ex Libris series, edited by Gleeson White. According to the prospectus, the book was to be published in imperial 16mo. (In fours), [i - iv], v - xii, 335pp. Original prospectus sheets bound in at rear. Rebound in modern half calf over marbled paper boards. Same marbled paper used for the endpapers. Five raised bands to spine with gilt and contrasting title panel. Top edge gilt. Page edges appear to have been retrimmed but plenty of margin remaining. "This book has its origin in the course of three (Cantor) Lectures given before the Society of Arts in 1889; they have been amplified and added to, and further chapters have been written, treating of the very active period in printing and decorative book-illustration we have seen since that time, as well as some remarks and suggestions touching the general principles and conditions governing the design of book pages and ornaments. Within its own lines I hope that if not exhaustive, the book may be found fairly representative of the chief historical and contemporary." types of decorative book-illustration.The book will contain a very large number of illustrations, many reproduced by special permission from Mr William Morris's beautiful collection of early printed books." Text block solid and tight. Very occasional and light spotting/toning. Free of inscriptions and other marks. Tissue guards a little toned around the edges. No jacket.

Description: Full morocco, 7 1/2 inches tall. A pristine full crushed morocco by Sangorski and Sutcliffe in Russell Flint's own distinctive design and from his library. With raised bands, a single gilt star to the spine and a gilt key motif on the upper board. The binding, which dates from 1969 has the following pencil inscription in Walter William Russell Flint's own hand on the paste down endpaper: "Board of education South Kensington. National Book Prize awarded to William Russell Flint of Edinburgh Royal Institution School of Art for success in subject 9a at the National arts Competition 1900". A unique and lovely copy of this profusely illustrated and informative work.
