There is writing promoting social change, writing punishing injustice, writing in celebration of heroism, but always that base theme. Try to understand each other." - John Steinbeck in his 1938 journal entry

Price: US$1200.00 + shipping

Description: First edition of the play version of John Steinbeck's landmark work, following the tragedy of two migrant farm workers in the Great Depression. Published in the same year as the novella, the OF MICE AND MEN play was adapted for the stage by Steinbeck himself. The play made its Broadway debut under director George S. Kaufman while the novella was still at the top of the bestseller list; Kaufman advised Steinbeck on the stage adaptation, urging him to "preserve the marvelous tenderness of the book," but also to add "a little more humor" to "heighten the subsequent tragedy by comparison" (Steinbeck and Wallsten). Lon Chaney, Jr., the originator of the role of Lennie in the initial production, would go on to reprise his role in the 1939 film. 7.5'' x 5''. Original beige cloth binding with black and brown titles. Original unclipped ($2.00) blue, beige, and white dust jacket. Yellow endpapers. Blue topstain. Title page with blue ornament. 172 pages. Description: First edition of Steinbeck's dramatization of his poignant novel. Octavo, original cloth. Near fine in a very good first issue dust jacket with the publisher's price of $2.00. Housed in a custom half morocco and chemise clamshell box. A very sharp example. John Steinbeck began Of Mice and Men as a children’s story. “Although the finished novelette does not seem appropriate for childrenâ€"that intention was obviously abandonedâ€"the simplicity of its style and the clarity and precision of its imagery may well have been prompted by this original purpose… ” (Benson, 326). The result is “a sophisticated and artful rendering of the basic conflict between two worlds: between an idealized landscape and the real world with its pain and anguish” (Literary History of the American West). "A thriller, a gripping tale . . . that you will not set down until it is finished. Steinbeck has touched the quick" (The New York Times).

Steinbeck, John. Of Mice and Men. Covici Friede, New York, 1937.

Price: US$3322.19 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, with all first issue points accounted for, as follows: contains the bullet (or dot) between the 8's on page 88 which was removed in all later printings. With nine words to bottom of page 9 including the word "pendula". Lines 20 & 21 read "and only moved because the heavy hands were pendula". These nine words were removed in later printings & the entire page reset. The second state has "loosely" instead of "pendula" on page 9. Top edge of book block is stained blue, as issued. Later issues were unstained. This copy printed by J.J. Little & Ives Co. Later issues (& all book club copies) were printed by Haddon Craftsmen. Finally, the first issue (as in this copy) does not list St. Katy the Virgin in the titles "Also by John Steinbeck" opposite title page. Apparently an oversight, as St. Katy was previously released by Covici Friede in 1936. The title was added to the list in the second printing. Bound in original tan cloth, titles & design to spine & front board in orange & black. This copy of the actual book with ALL FIRST ISSUE POINTS. The dustjacket is a curiosity: Firstly, it should have original price ($2.00) printed on inner front flap (no price on this copy), plus shallow beveled corners on all flaps as published (which this copy has). This copy of the dustjacket has a curious misprint: in the last line of the second paragraph on the rear inside flap the word "is" is misprinted as "it". The full sentence reads: "She holds an uncanny fascination for these men, a fascination against which Lennie's simple mind it not able to set up adequate controls". Apparently the contemporary (also 1937) book club edition of the dustjacket contained the misprinted "it". NOTE: All things considered, this copy appears be a first edition of the book married at some point with a nice copy of the 1937 book club dustjacket. Firsts Magazine (February 2003, Vol.13, No.2) spells it all out in an in-depth 6-page feature article regarding complexities of the various issue points (see for full details), however there still appears to be some (justified) confusion among many dealers & collectors. From Firsts Magazine (in part): "The problems with first issue copies begin with price-clipped jackets. The large majority of jackets have shallow, beveled corners, which collectors sometimes confuse for price-clipping. At first glance, a clipped book club jacket looks very much like a first edition jacket. In fact, some collectors say you can't tell the difference. Many book club jackets can easily be distinguished by a misspelling on the rear flap. At some point 'it' replaced the correct 'is'. In a perfect world that might be the end of the matter. But not all book club edition jackets have the misprint. Some book club jackets have a blurry 's', indicating that the type was damaged or deteriorating, & the error crept in during an attempt to solve the problem. But not all book clubs have the blurry 's', & genuine jackets also have a slightly irregular 's'. Some dealers point out that the book club jackets have deeper colors - particularly a darker blue. But, here again, the book club jackets are not consistently more colorful" [the article continues at length]. Covici Friede published Of Mice & Men on 25 February, 1937. By way of illustrating this volume's scarcity, 2500 copies of the first issue were printed, versus 50,000 for The Grapes of Wrath, & 78,000 for Cannery Row. Overall condition is VG/VG. The book is slightly cocked, small light stain to top corner of spine, mild marginal toning, original blue staining to top edge faded, otherwise a nice clean tight solid hardcover copy. The dustjacket is lightly rubbed, small closed tears to upper edge of rear panel, slight wear to spine ends & extremities, mild toning, otherwise a bright clean & complete jacket. The dustjacket is now protected in a removable clear Bro-dart cover. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE in a scarce misprinted book club dustjacket in nice condition. RARE.

Steinbeck's tragic novella portraying the life of two migrant farm-hands in California, unlikely friends cherishing the common dream of a better life. When George realizes that Lennie's childlike understanding of the world has led to irreparable violence, George ends Lennie's life as mercifully as he can before the arrival of a lynch mob. "If the story were callously told, the conclusion might be unbearable. But Mr. Steinbeck has told it with both passion and dexterity. The patient comradeship is developed in a series of homely episodes, conveyed in the vernacular of two lonely men blundering about their small world.Of Mice and Men is the dark side of an idyll" (Atkinson, contemporary NYT review). One of the author's most profound works. Goldstone & Payne A7a. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.

STEINBECK, John.. Of Mice and Men.. New York: Covici Friede, 1937, 1937.

Price: US$5088.09 + shipping

Description: First edition, first printing, of Steinbeck's first "play novelette", an experimental literary form intended to be both a novella and a script for a play. First staged on Broadway on 23 November 1937, the story won the Drama Critics Circle Award for best play. Based on Steinbeck's experience working with migrant farm workers in the 1910s, the novella is titled after Robert Burn's poem "To a Mouse". The book was "one of the first in a long line of 'experiments', a word he often used to identify a forthcoming project. [It] is a tightly drafted study of bindle stiffs whose dreams he intended to represent the universal longings for a home, 'the earth longings of a Lennie who was not to represent insanity at all but the inarticulate and powerful yearning of all men', he wrote his agent. Both the text and the critically acclaimed 1937 Broadway play. made Steinbeck a household name, assuring his popularity and, for some, his infamy. (The book's language shocked many, and it is still listed with frequency on lists of 'objectionable reading' or 'banned books' for secondary school students.)" (ANB). This copy has all the requisite points of first printing: copyright page giving the printer as J. J. Little and Ives Company rather than Haddon; the phrase "and only moved because the heavy hands were pendula" (p. 9, l. 20-1); bullet point to the pagination of p. 88; and the dyed top edge. Goldstone & Payne A7a. Octavo. Original buff cloth, spine and front cover lettered in buff on orange ground ruled in black, top edge blue. With dust jacket. Housed in dark green quarter morocco folding box by the Chelsea Bindery. Title page printed in similar fashion as binding design. Small bookseller's ticket on rear pastedown. Head of spine lightly toned, a few spots of foxing to edges and rear pastedown; jacket spine toned, tiny spot of skinning on front panel touching one letter, slight creasing and foxing at extremities and flap folds, faint vertical crease mark to both flaps, else clean, unclipped: a very good copy in like jacket.

One of John Steinbeck's finest and most enduring achievements, Of Mice and Men (1937) tells the tragic story of George and Lennie, an unlikely pair of friends who find work at a farm during the Great Depression. The book's title, taken from Robert Burns' poem "To a Mouse," reflects the doomed dreams of the protagonists. As a result of its controversial social commentaries, Of Mice and Men has been historically subject to censorship and remains on the American Library Association's list of "Most Challenged Books of the 21st Century." Written by Steinbeck with an eye to the stage (in a letter Steinbeck calls it "a kind of playable novel, written in novel form but so scened and set that it can be played as it stands"), the book was adapted into a play the very year that it was published, staged by musical theater luminary George S. Kaufman. The play was performed at the Music Box Theatre and ran from November 23, 1937 to May 21, 1938. In 1939, the work was adapted into a critically acclaimed film directed by Lewis Milestone, starring Burgess Meredith and Lon Chaney Jr. This small archive consists of three different copies of Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men that were owned by Frank Coletti. Coletti worked as the stage manager for the 1937 theatrical production of the book and the dialogue coach f
