Description: 7 parts in 9 volumes - original edition 1901, half faux-vellum over brown covers, sides untrimmed. This copy with duplicate frontispieces portraits of Horace from etchings by W. H. W. Bickell (3), James Fagan, Edmund H. Garrett, Howard Pyle, with the extras signed by them. Pages watermarked Bibliophile Society on the vertical. Limitation for this set is in Vol II Part 1, this Roman Numeral X, a complimentary copy printed for the editor Clarence Lawrence Smith with the limitation signed W. F. Hobson. Title page illustrated in woodcut by Howard Pyle (H.Pyle cut into lower right). A handsome production. Spines tanned a bit. A slight abrasion to the spine of Volume 1, a short tear to the top of Volume 3. Unused volumes, leaves uncut, internals quite bright, some light foxing confined to prelims and rears.

Description: The complete set of eight volumes in ten, all in double slipcases. All volumes are in very good to near fine condition. All are bound in quarter vegetable vellum over brown paper covered boards; most show light spotting to vellum and/or darkening to spine, and some are lightly rubbed at top or bottom edge of boards; in every case, contents are bright, fresh, and unmarked, with foxing to the front free endpaper of Volume VII only. The outer slipcases, though somewhat age-darkened, are in very good to near fine condition, with paper labels intact, all joints strong, and minor bumping only. The cloth-lined inner slipcases range in condition from poor to very good. That for Volume VIII is in poor condition: bottom panel broken (but complete), top and bottom joints split, and cloth lining loosened. Three others show cracking or splitting at joints; the remaining six are intact. This is set number 61 of an edition of 467 copies.

Housed in publisher's original chemises and slipcases. $5000.Limited illustrated edition, one (unnumbered) of 467 sets, with title page decoration by Howard Pyle and 12 double suite etchings by W.H.W. Bicknell, James Fagan and Edmund H. Garrett, signed in pencil by the respective artist on one impression, including a Bicknell etching after a Pyle painting, signed in pencil by Pyle, beautifully bound and in fine condition.Latin text edited by Clement Lawrence Smith of Harvard University, who also provides a life of the Roman poet. Translations are provided as "versions, paraphrases and explanatory notes by eminent scholars, statesmen and poets." Each poem is additionally decorated with numerous woodcut vignettes, borders and ornamented capitals. Volume VII, Bibliography, includes 21 facsimiles of title pages of editions of Horace. Volume II, Part II and Volume IV, Part II issued without the limitation page or Pyle title page. Volume VII also without limitation page; marbled boards and endpapers differ from those of the other volumes but spines uniform, as issued. "Bibliophile Society" appears in watermark on the outer margin of each leaf. Minor spotting to a few interior leaves of Volume IV, Part I. A lovely set in fine condition.
