Description: New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1932. Near Fine condition in a Near Very Good dust jacket. Square, tight, unmarked copy. Sharp corners. Cloth spine is lightly faded. The spine of the Dust Jacket is sunned (paper browning but lettering still distinct) else Very Good. No owner's name or bookplate. No remainder mark. First book appearance of three stories [Neighbor Rosicky; Old Mrs. Harris; & Two Friends] previously published in magazines. Original green cloth. Mounted on the spine and front cover are the original pale blue paper labels, printed in orange and black. This copy's Dust Jacket agrees with that described first in Joan Crane's Willa Cather, A Bibliography, i.e. gray-pink wove paper printed in red and blue. [Crane also describes an alternate jacket (no priority), printed in green and dark red on bright yellow paper]. Crane notes that "on all copies of both jackets, a corner is cut away from the front inner flap where the price was printed." Crane explains that the publisher had a large number of jackets imprinted with a $2.50 flap price, but clipped the price before publication, having decided to offer the book for $2.00. [Watch out for an unclipped Dust Jacket with $2.00 printed price on a first edition book -- that jacket has been switched from a much later copy. First printing, price-clipped jackets were used on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th printings, and were not used up until midway through the 5th printing]. Crane A19.a.i. Cather, Willa. Obscure Destinies (1st Trade Edition/1st Printing). Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 1932.

Price: US$115.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: Near-Fine condition 1st Trade Edition/1st Printing hardcover in Very Good condition dust jacket. Collector's copy of Cather's classic collection of three long stories. The book is square and sound. Spotless inside with no creases, marks or damage to pages. Exterior covers and spine are also spotless but spine is faded (as it always is on Cather titles) as are edges (the fading on this copy is quite mild compared to many -- see pictures). The book's only additional flaw is that corners are just ever-so-slightly turned in at the tips -- maybe a 1/16 of an inch. A really beautiful copy. The dust jacket is clipped (the manufacturer clipped all copies before distribution due to a price-change) but is completely clean although significantly toned on the spine. There are several tiny chips and tears along the edges, none of which reaches 1/4" in length and a single 1/4" hole in the back panel near the rear inside flap seam. We will pack this lovely 1st in bubble-wrap and will ship it in a sturdy box to ensure safe delivery.

Willa Cather (1873 - 1947) was an American writer who achieved recognition for her novels of frontier life on the Great Plains, including O Pioneers! (1913), The Song of the Lark (1915), and My Ántonia (1918). In 1923 she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for One of Ours (1922), a novel set during World War I. The three stories in this collection OBSCURE DESTINIES are: "Neigbour Rosicky," "Old Mrs. Harris," and "Two Friends." Each story deals with the death of a central character and asks how the ordinary lives of these characters can be valued and how "beauty was found or created in seemingly ordinary circumstances."--Wikipedia SUPERIOR COPYL Clean, solid, bright and tight copy: the green cloth has faded to greenish-yellow in places, as is common. Remarkably bright and clean dust jacket with a few minute nicks along its extremities. The jacket is price-clipped in keeping with late pricing changes by the publisher. Condition: Near Fine

Description: First edition, trade issue. Very faint sunning at spine, two tiny stains on front fly, near fine in very near fine dust jacket (price-clipped by the publisher, as in all copies), very slight sunning at the spine, and a tiny pressure puncture in rear gutter. A much nicer than usual copy. Contains three stories, *Neighbour Rosicky, Old Mrs. Harris*, and *Two Friends*, focusing on two of Cather's major themes: the hardship of the frontier and the struggle of talent to emerge from stifling origins.
