Description: Black and White illustrations, including by Cruickshank. Later - possible modern - binding, retaining previous (damaged) leather spine. Marbled endpaper don't match, one perhaps a victim of the rebinding process? Very Good condition, but many illustrations are considerably darkened.

Description: The first five volumes of this periodical, edited by Charles Dickens, contain the entirety of Oliver Twist in its first printing, The bindings, in red half-leather, is quite rubbed at the hinges in four of the volumes but still quite sound. However in volume 5 the front cover and spine is detached, though present. The text throughout is generally tight and clean, but many of the illustration plates are foxed, to a varying degree, though I've seen worse, Fairly scarce collectable item that will benefit from restoration. Heavy item - extra postage may be requested, depending on destination. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall

I & II are here signed "Boz"). Contains the first print appearance of Oliver Twist, serialized February 1837 to March 1839, and illustrated with 24 engraved plates by George Cruikshank. Description: First edition thus, one of two formats (the other larger and in 4 pages), of Dickens's supplement to Bentley's Miscellany. Dickens undertook the editorship of Bentley's Miscellany, commencing publication in January 1837. For the third issue (March) Dickens wrote this Extraordinary Gazette, veiled as a royal publication, promoting Richard Bentley's publishing house, and pitching Oliver Twist, then being serialized in the magazine. The pamphlet was bound into Bentley's publications as advertisements, and possibly issued separately. The title vignette by Phiz is the first caricature of Dickens. Gimbel E33. 8pp. sewn pamphlet, small octavo. Housed in a custom green cloth chemise within green half calf bookform slipcase, twin red morocco labels, green cloth sides, front panel lettered in gilt. Title vignette by Phiz. Lightly foxed, but otherwise in excellent condition.

Description: Front. & plates after Cruikshank, Phiz & Joshua Reynolds. Contemp. half black calf, spines ruled in gilt, maroon morocco labels, marbled boards; a little rubbed, but a good-plus clean copy. The first five volumes of Bentley's Miscellany were edited by Dickens; included in these volumes are the first publications of Oliver Twist, which commenced in the second number, February 1837, Mudfog Papers, The Pantomime of Life, Public Life of Mr. Tulrumble, A Familiar Epistle from a Parent to a Child, &c. Also included are contributions from numerous familiar literary figures. Victor Hugo, George Hogarth, Tyrone Power, W.H. Ainsworth, Paul de Kock, Griskin, Hoffmann, and Edward Mayhew are among those represented. Ainsworth took over as editor in 1840, and would later buy the publication.

Description: 16 volumes, octavo, 12 volumes are full leather, fading marbled edges, marbled endpapers, foxing throughout, two volumes rebound in brown boards, 2 volumes half-leather with worn boards, all ex-library with spine labels and rubber stamps to page edges of rebound books. Leather scuffed and worn, a few volumes splitting at front gutter, the rebound copies are tight with clean boards. There are no marks to the text, large dampstain to volume 3, titles on backstrips are worn but clean. Volumes 6 and 8 are rebound, Volumes 4 and 10 are half-leather. All other volumes are full leather. Dozens of famed authors of the period, particularly rare Dickens & Poe stories in their first iterations.
