Description: First edition, First printing. Frontispiece portrait with tissue guard; 140 pages, plus one page of publisher's ads. The original maroon cloth is very good over stiff beveled boards, square and strong, with gilt title, facsimile signature, spiral designs, and decorative "D McKay" all still remarkably bright on the upper board. The fancy gilt lettering (no lines) on the spine is clear but a little less bright. The corner tips and bottom edge of the cloth show a hint of rubbing; the spine ends a bit more, with a miniscule tear at the head; a few light scuff marks to lower board. The interior is fresh, crisp, and clean, despite normal gentle toning throughout; the endpapers are completely unmarked, though the front hinge has one inch of superficial cracking. Top-edge gilt, both others trimmed and somewhat toned. [Please see multiple images of the actual book.] "A Backward Glance O'er Travel'd Roads"; "Sands at Seventy"; "Some War Memoranda"; Elias Hicks, Abraham Lincoln, George Fox and Shakspere [sic], etc. As with every book from my father's collection, tipped in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage. All books are wrapped with special care and are shipped promptly---domestic sales sent with 'delivery confirmation' tracking; international sales sent via global priority, also with tracking. Description: First edition, Third Printing. 8vo. 140pp. + 1p advertisements. The scarce and important "Third Printing," produced by Whitman for the sole purpose of distribution to his personal friends. Original publisher's dark green smooth woven cloth, beveled boards with two gilt circular swirl decorates and lettering on cover and spine, in gilt. This copy inscribed on the front free endpaper by Horace Traubel, the author's close friend and confident who handled all of his affairs, especially near the end where he would stay by Whitman's bed, and certainly following his death, gifting a number of his "extra" volumes to friends and family members. Written first by Traubel, and following by his granddaughter Gertrude Traubel who later received the volume: "To Will Innes, With loyal feelings, Horace Traubel, 1896." And below, written by Gertrude Traubel, "And which he [Will Innes] gave to Gertrude Traubel on Sunday afternoon, December 17, -1967-" Will Innes was a friend of the Traubel family, and gave a significant portion of his library to his granddaughter, Gertrude, in 1967, who became a great advocate and enthusiast of Whitman. Whitman originally intended to publish these sheets bound with Good-Bye My Fancy (1891), but his illness prevented him from realizing this plan. It seems probable, however, that after Whitman's death his executors had these sheets and the remainder of Good-Bye My Fancy bound in uniform, but separate, bindings" (BAL). This is the third printing, with "melee" on page 6, and "in the least," on page 11 (Myerson). Several extant copies of this third printing bear notes in Traubel's hand indicating that it was made by Whitman "for his personal friends and never put on the market." From the Whitman Archive: "He had the book bound in the same deep red cloth that November Boughs had appeared in (fig. 83), also binding up some in deep green (fig. 84) to give to his friends, so that even in this final volume, he was still balancing his reds and greens, as he had done his whole life." And, in another book which was also presentation by Traubel, he states: ".This edition of November Boughs. bound in green was designed by Walt Whitman for his friends, not for the market, and was never anywhere put on sale." A wonderful Presentation of an important special edition put out by Whitman in his last years. In fine condition.

Description: First edition, first issue. Presentation copy, inscribed by Whitman on the front free endpaper to his close friend, William Ingram: "Wm Ingram / from the author / Walt Whitman / Oct: 2 '88--". Publisher's flexible dark red cloth boards, lettered in gilt. One of approximately 100 special copies printed for Whitman for presentation (binding A). Spine ends lightly worn, tear to lower with a minor repair, a few small spots, light offsetting to pastedowns and endpaper, else very good or better. BAL 21430. Having published Specimen Days 6 years prior, Walt Whitman published November Boughs in 1888. A collection of new poems plus articles he had previously published, it contains insightful self-critique of his own work and what he believed would be his literary legacy. Notably, Whitman cites his magnum opus Leaves of Grass, acknowledging the public's lack of understanding of it, their outrage at its subject matter, and its failure to become a best-seller. The articles also reflect his views on society, namely his support of the working class and Native Americans, and lessons learned from his harrowing yet rewarding encounters working as a nurse during the American Civil War. Published when he himself was turning 70 years old, the poems in November Boughs are grouped under the heading "Sands at Seventy."They reflect his acknowledgment of his old age, but also his hope to continue writing until the very end, whenever that would be.
