Price: US$320.82 + shipping
Description: First trade edition, second impression, of the author's first book, originally composed on brown paper given to him for the intended purpose of making bags while he was imprisoned. "Genet was sentenced to three days in solitary confinement for writing on the paper. material that 'wasn't intended', as Genet would later claim the prison officials told him, 'for literary masterpieces'" (Nelson). Notre-Dame-des-Fleurs was first published by Robert Denoël and Paul Morbien in 1943, and circulated as private erotica. Genet later excised some of the more graphic passages, and the first trade edition was published by Marc Barbexat of the literary journal L'Arbalète in 1944. Max Nelson, "Kicked Towards Saintliness", The Paris Review, 21 Jan. 2016. Octavo. Original white wrappers, edges untrimmed and unopened. With glassine jacket, and handmade white paper wrapper with red-lettered spine. Text printed in red and black. A little creasing to wrappers, foxing to top edge, contents fresh. A very good copy indeed, in the like paper wrapper, couple of nicks, light browning and small stain to foot, else sharp.
