Price: US$375.00 + shipping

Description: Hugo's classic work, ably translated by Andrew Lang. This set is number 831 of 1500 copies printed by R. Coulouma, Master Printer in Argenteuil, and signed by the illustrator on the colophon leaf. Translated by Jessie Haynes. Critical introduction by Andrew Lang. 2 volumes. Small quarto. Pp. xxix, 308, [2] +[2], 376. Illustrated throughout with woodcuts by Frans Masereel. Illustrated peach Ingres paper wrappers with glassine jackets. Small tears to glassine jacket on volume one. Bookplate in each volume. A beautiful set, entirely uncut. The publisher, George Macy, noted that upon reception of their copies, many subscriber's felt "cheated because the two volumes were paperbound. We had to bind in hard cases, American fashion, most of the copies." The two volumes, the thirteenth publication of the press, are quite scarce in the original wrappers, especially in this condition. Each volume is printed on thick Velin D'arches paper. The woodcut illustrations were executed by master woodcut artist, Frans Masereel. Included are twenty-two woodcut illustrations, 11 of them full-page. A very collectible set in the publisher's original binding.

HUGO, Victor. NOTRE-DAME DE PARIS. Limited Editions Club, Paris, 1930.

Price: US$500.00 + shipping

Description: Two quarto volumes (7-3/4" x 10-1/8") bound in pink Ingres paper wrappers. Introduction by Andrew Lang and illustrated with woodcuts by Frans Masereel. George Macy noted that upon reception of their copies, many members felt "cheated because the two volumes were paperbound. We had to bind in hard cases, American fashion, most of the copies." That said, of the approximately two dozen copies we have handled over the years, all but two were in their original paper wrappers, as is this copy. Of a total edition of 1500 copies SIGNED by the artist on the colophon page, this is one of only 15 Presentation Copies with the publisher's blindstamp attesting to such on the colophon page where the printed number "444" is struck through and "Office Copy" is handwritten. Acquired directly from the publisher's family. Mostly unopened. Some chipping and cracking to the paper spines, resulting in a bit of looseness to some signatures. Still Very Good in glassines with tears and a Near Fine later chemise and Very Good slipcase with a split, made for the publisher
