Description: First edition (not stated). i-vi, [4], vii-xii, 1-193, [1], i-cccxxx pages. Hardcover: H 26.25cm x L 16.5cm. Original green cloth; front board only tenuously attached (rear board is firm as is text block); both boards rubbed with bumped corners worn; spine cloth sunned to light brown with tearing and chipping at ends. Deckle edges. Large "Gloucester" bookplate on front pastedown. Past owner's ink inscription at half-title's top right. Four page brochure "A List of Subscribers to Notitia Venatica" bound-in between pages vi-vii. Page xii list calls for eleven illustrations all of which are present (eight are full page plates of which only four retain laid-in tissue guards; remaining three are smaller sketches inset within text). Interior foxing strongest upon plates and their adjacent pages; moisture stains at bottom margins of leaves at book's center and some scattered soiling. Sold as is. Description: First edition (hardback). 8vo, xii, 193pp, cccxxx. 8 tinted lithographic plates by Henry Alken (correct as per list), 3 text illustrations. Publisher's blindstamped green cloth, gilt titling to the spine. Some light rubbing and marking of the boards, inner hinges strained (and repaired), plates foxed. Overall, this copy is in good condition. A 3pp subscribers list is loosely inserted. This was one of only two editions (the other being the second edition of 1842) to include the lengthy stud book, which has a separate half-title "A Kennel stud book, shewing the pedigrees of many of the most celebrated packs of fox-hounds in England, 1840"

Later half green morocco, raised bands, gilt in compartments, marbled endpapers, a.e.g., foxing to plate margins and some neighbouring pages, though this not unduly affecting what is a largely clean and attractive copy. The author having been 'some time Master of the North Warwickshire and Holderness Hounds'.
