Description: Illustrated by Donald McKay. This copy has penciled notes on the front endpaper (and a sheet of typed and penciled notes laid in) from Peter Howard (Serendipity Books) partially revising Goldstone's 370 copy limitation. The volume is edge rubbed with bumped corners, the spine area is unevenly soiled, and the ends are professionally touched-up. In additional to aforementioned penciled notes, there is occasional light soiling and the volume is a bit over opened at the presentation page.

Description: As the book's Acknowledgment states, "This is the first separate publication of Nothing So Monstrous, which originally formed one of the episodes in The Pastures of Heaven, . . . The epilogue was written specially for this book. December, 1936." This is one of 376 copies published by Pynson for six individuals: Elmer Adler (50 copies), Frederick Adams (100), Ben Abramson (150), Howard Mott (20), Edwin Beinecke (50), and Steinbeck (6). This is an Adler copy, with the presentation page at the back of the book reading, "This copy of Nothing So Monstrous with pen and ink drawings by Donald McKay was made by The Pynson Printers of New York at the request of [signed] Elmer Adler, for presentation to [handwritten] Louise Huger. December Nineteen thirty-six." Huger went on to become the editor for the Letters to the Editor department for The New York Times, from 1946 to 1968. The marbled clothbound boards are heavily worn at the corners and spine ends, with the top inch of the spine missing. Lacking the original glassine jacket; Mylar protected.

Description: First Separate Edition (originally published in *The Pastures of Heaven*, 1932). An unusually fine, fresh copy with the corners square and virtually unrubbed. Goldstone notes that the paper supply allowed only 370 copies to be printed. Published for subscribers to use as Christmas gifts, the colophon was customized with the subscriber's name following "made by the Pynson Printers of New York at the request of [blank] for presentation to [blank]." 50 copies were so designated for Elmer Adler, 100 for Frederick B. Adams, Jr., 150 for Ben Abramson, 50 for Edwin J. Beinecke, and 20 for antiquarian bookseller Howard Mott (although evidently fewer were issued with his name; only one is known). Unknown to Goldstone, there were six copies for Steinbeck as well. This copy has the subscriber's name, *The Colophon,* handwritten in for presentation to the noted printer Carl P. Rollins. Additionally this copy is Signed by the subscribers Adams and Adler, as well as by bookman John T. Winterich. All three were editors of *The Colophon,* a magazine for book collectors. Rollins was the first "University Printer" at Yale. *Goldstone* A2f.

Of 370 copies this is one of 50 made at the request of Edwin J. Beinecke, who has presented it to Robert Borthwick Adam, of the famous book collecting family. Borthwick's name is inscribed in the colophon, and there is an additional Christmas greeting on the front fly-leaf to Adam signed by Beinecke whose leather bookplate is affixed to the end-paper, and has offset onto the fly-leaf.

B. Adams, and John Winterich, Sally and Rockwell Kent's modest bookplate affixed to the front pastedown, now housed in Kent's custom slipcase. Fine.
