Price: US$39.95 + shipping

Description: London: J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd, 1921. A very nice copy in collectible Very Good+ condition. Only a light touch of wear to the corners and spine ends. Clean, square, unmarked copy. No owner's name or bookplate. Inner hinges are perfectly sound. Title-page printed in black and red. This book comes in 3 states (some say issues) of which this is the third, with a correction to "Tales of the Sea" on page xi in the table of contents. The error ("Tales of the e") is here corrected by way of a cancel leaf. Original dark green cloth. The author's monogram, within a wreath of laurels, is blind-stamped on the front cover. Gilt-lettered spine, still fairly bright and shiny. Keating 140; Wise 59; Smith 24. From the Authors Note: "I don't know whether I ought to offer an apology for this collection which has more to do with life than with letters And so here they are, dusted, which was but a decent thing to do, but in no way polished, extending from the year '98 to the year '20, a thin array (for such a stretch of time) of really innocent attitudes: Conrad literary, Conrad political, Conrad reminiscent, Conrad controversial. Well, yes! A one-man show - or is it merely the show of one man?" Among the essays first collected here are on subjects such as: the loss of the Titanic; the Titanic inquiry; the Merchant Service; English seamen in World War One; aviation; Captain Marryat and James Fenimore Cooper; London Sailors' Home; the response to the sinking of the liner, Empress of Ireland; etc. Contents include essays entitled: Books; Henry James; Alphonse Daudet; Guy de Maupassant; Anatole France; Turgenev; Stephen Crane; Tales of the Sea; An Observer in Malaya; A Happy Wanderer; The Life Beyond; The Censor of Plays; Autocracy and War; The Crime of Partition; A Note on the Polish Problem; Poland Revisited; First News; Well Done; Tradition; Confidence [last]; Flight; Some Reflections on the Loss of the Titanic; Certain Aspects of the Admirable Inquiry; Protection of Ocean Liners; A Friendly Place. [Note: This is the first edition to be published. It was preceded by a rare advance printing, for distribution to friends of the author. Of it, Conrad's bibliographer Thomas J. Wise says there were but 33 copies, all labeled "Privately Printed"]. . First Published Edition, Third State. Hardcover. Very Good+ condition/No jacket. 8vo. xii, 354pp.

Condition: Very Good

Description: Joseph Conrad shares his literary views and provides a commentary on contemporary events in this collection of twenty six essays Comprised of twenty six varied essays published between 1898 and 1920, this volume offers insight into the facets of British Polish novelist Joseph Conrad. As Conrad states in the introductory author's note, the volume gives the reader a perspective of Conrad in a range of attitudes; 'Conrad literary, Conrad political, Conrad reminiscent, Conrad controversial'. Whilst the first half of the work focusses on Conrad's literary views with essays on Henry James and Guy de Maupassant, the second half reveals Conrad's views on events of the day, such as his reflections on the sinking of the Titanic. Includes the essay, Note on the Polish Problem, which was not published outside of this volume. According to Cagle, the book comes in three states. This is the third, with 'sea' correctly spelt in the table of contents. In the publisher's original green cloth binding. Externally, smart with just some minor shelf wear. Lightly bumped to the head and tail of the spine, with some marginal wear to the extremities. Some light offsetting to the front and rear endpapers. Internally, generally firmly bound, with some tenderness at pages 194 and 195. Pages bright and clean except at these pages. Very Good

CONRAD, JOSEPH. Notes On Life & Letters. J. M. Dent, London, 1921.

Price: US$450.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: Original green cloth with embossed blind design on front board with J. C. in the middle. Lettered in gilt on the spine. Top and fore-edge smooth, bottom edge rough cut. "Sea" on page ix is perfect and "Privately Printed" does not appear on page iv. The complete dust jacket is a little dusty on the spine but overall remains very nice indeed. There is some slight discoloration to the endpapers but the contents remain very bright. Of particular interest are the two articles concerning R. M. S. Titanic. Reading the bibliographic notes can cause a headache. I used "Joseph Conrad, A Bibliographical Catalogue." by Walter E. Smith, pp. 82 - 89. From an edition of 9500 copies. This is the first published or "trade" edition in the third variant issue. "Sea" seems to be the big point. In one version the "S" and the "A" are missing. In another those letters are impressed by hand and are slightly off alignment, and then the third with the page re-set and "Sea" appearing perfectly. This is the copy on offer here. Near Fine / Very Good.

Conrad, Joseph. NOTES ON LIFE & LETTERS [inscribed by Conrad]. , 1921.

Price: US$2450.00 + shipping

Description: [inscribed by Conrad] London & Toronto: J.M. Dent & Sons, 1921. Original green cloth, with dust jacket. First Edition (preceded by a 35-copy privately-printed issue). This is a collection of pieces that had appeared, over the prior two years, as 25-copy pamphlets produced by Clement Shorter and by T.J. Wise. This copy is in the second state (with the "S" and "A" of "SEA" hand-stamped onto page xi). The first state lacks these letters entirely; the third and usual state has a cancel leaf with the letters properly printed. According to a Dent employee quoted by Supino, the first state consisted of only about 100 copies, and this second state about 900 copies; the other 8,450 copies (the subsequent binding orders of the first edition) would have been in the third (cancel-leaf) state. This is a near-fine copy (some cracking of the endpapers), in a very good-plus jacket: the jacket's spine is a little darkened as usual, and there is a shallow chip at the head of the spine (not affecting print). Supino A23.3.0; Cagle A51a(2). Housed in a (slightly scuffed) morocco-backed slipcase with inner chemise. This copy is boldly inscribed by Conrad on the front free endpaper, "To Arthur Rogers | from Joseph Conrad | 1921 [followed by Conrad's usual flourish]". We have been unable to identify the recipient, although it has been noted that there was a contemporary bookseller by that name.
