LANG,Andrew. THE LIBRARY. With a Chapter on Modern English Illustrated Books by Austin DOBSON. Macmillan, London, 1881.

Price: US$50.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: 12mo, 184 pages + publisher's ads, powder blue cloth, spine darkened a trifle "Many married men are reduced to collecting Elzevirs, which go readily into the pocket for you cannot smuggle a folio volume easily. This inveterate dislike of books often produces a very deplorable result when an old collector dies. His 'womankind,' as the Antiquary called them, sell all his treasures for the price of waste-paper, to the nearest country bookseller. . But this little work will not have been written in vain if it persuades the ladies who inherit books not to sell them hastily, without taking a good and disinterested opinion as to their value. They often dispose of treasures worth thousands, for a ten pound note, and take pride in the bargain." - p.62." Of course the pity is that few of "womankind" will read or will have read as far as page 62. Issued in the Art At Home series. With two chromolithographs of fine bindings from the All Souls' Library, drawn and colored by Dr. J. J. Wild. The pages on Illuminated MSS are by Rev. W. J. Loftie. With woodcuts from original drawings by Walter Crane, Kate Greenaway [ Thomson, GREENAWAY #120; Schuster & Engen, 108a]; and other woodcuts by Richard Doyle, William Blake, Thomas Bewick, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, George Cruikshank, George DuMaurier; and with two woodcuts by John Tenniel from the ALICE books.
