Adeline Lubell-Naiman, a Little, Brown editor, convinced Mailer to submit the first 200 pages of THE NAKED AND THE DEAD to her publisher and talked up the manuscript; but she suggested historian and critic Bernard DeVoto read the manuscript. He recommended not publishing it. Mailer submitted it to Rinehart, and the rest is history. Still, over the years, Lubell-Naiman and Mailer remained close, and in the summer of 1968 she played "Adeline McCarthy," a president of a women's college in Mailer's film "Maidstone." Fine.
