Cream card covers, thin rectangular spine with sharp edges; illustrated by Arthur Rackham with grid of six squares on front cover, title lettering in dark green at top left square; Illustrator name in dark green at lower left square; illustration of holly at top right and lower right squares; illustration of Santa with bag of toys over his shoulder and superimposed upon background of holly at left middle square, adjacent to blank square at middle right; same illustrated front and rear endpapers with upper half cream silhouettes of dancing children and many Christmas trees superimposed over red background, the reverse colors for same images on lower half endpapers; four full-page glossy illustrations, including Frontispiece, "And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose"; numerous additional illustrations in pen and ink by Rackham. A few tiny tears along upper and lower edges of card covers, which overlap text block edges and, as a consequence are folded down (appear to have been cut during booklet manufacture straight down the middle of a perfectly designed covering of the upper and lower edges); slight wear at tips of spine (dw and book); cream of dustwrapper (not price-clipped: '5/ -NET') slightly darker than cream of booklet with thin dw spine tanned additionally (dustwrapper did its job); previous owner bookplate discreetly placed on inside front cover, with printed names of "Ruth and Chester Greenough", who were married in 1931. From Wikipedia: Chester Noyes Greenough (1874 – February 27, 1938) was a Professor of English and Dean at Harvard University. //Born in Wakefield, Massachusetts in 1874, Greenough graduated from Harvard College in 1898, received his master's degree in 1899 and his doctorate in 1904, both from Harvard University. He taught at Harvard briefly before becoming head of the English Department at the University of Illinois in 1907.
