DICKENS, Charles; illustrations by Phiz. The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby. Chapman and Hall, London, 1839.

Price: US$500.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Octavo, 624pp., illustrated with 39 plates, plus frontispiece portrait of the author. Bears the crucial first-issue points identifying this as having been bound from the original parts, with errors on pp. 123, 160, 245, and 272, and the publisher's imprint on the first four plates. Bound in contemporary 3/5 burgundy morocco and marbled boards, with marbled endpapers, gilt spine title and copartments. Generally crisp and sound, with the front inner hinge thinly cracked, but holding, one leaf of the Contents re-attached with clear tape at the gutter. Plates foxed, some quite heavily, but they are all present (albeit with a few inserted a leaf or two away from where they ought to be; common in these early Dickens editions, bound from parts). Text mostly quite clean and vibrant. Two handsome bookplates to the front endpapers, along with a small pasted-on news clipping related to the book. Altogether, a nearly very good copy. Conforms to Gimbel A40 (that copy still in its original parts, and identified in that esteemed Dickens collection as being the earliest edition of "Nicholas Nickleby"). A decent, complete, and unrestored example of this early Dickens classic. Any prospective buyers with strong opinions on the various errors and issue points is encouraged to ask me specific questions before purchasing the book.

Description: Illustrations by Hablot K. Browne ("Phiz"). First edition, mixed state with "sister" and "letter" in the corrected state, many other points first state and uncorrected. Bound in contemporary three-quarter green calf, with five raised bands ruled in gilt, spine lettered in gilt, marbled paper-covered boards, and red sprinkled edges. Overall, a handsomely bound and sturdy copy. Smith, I, 5; Hatton & Cleaver, p. 131. Nicholas Nickleby is Dickens's third novel, which he began writing while Oliver Twist was still in progress. Characteristic of Dickens's work, Nicholas Nickleby is a whirlwind of social satire with a complex network of characters and plotlines. The book highlights the controversy that surrounded Yorkshire boarding schools in the 1830s as news stories brought to light the abuse and neglect that was common among these institutions, known for accepting unwanted children from parents who paid high prices to send them anywhere they could. Dickens's villain, Wackford Squeers, was based on Walter Shaw, the real-life headmaster of Bowes Academy, one of the schools reported for allowing rampant abuse of its pupils. The book has since been adapted for theater, television, and film and remains one of Dickens's most well-known works.

"It was the novelist's intention to expose in this story the terrible abuses practiced in the cheap boarding-schools of Yorkshire, and, in order that he realize their true character, he determined to investigate for himself the real facts as to the condition of those notorious seminaries, Accordingly, at the end of January 1838, he and 'Phiz' started on this memorable journey, in bitterly cold weather, and, visiting several schools in the locality, they came into direct contact with the proprietors. One of these was William Shaw, the identical schoolmaster who, some years previously, had been heavily fined for what was represented at the trial as gross maltreatment of his pupils" (Kitton, Dickens and His Illustrators, 75). Condition: Very Good

Description: First printing, mixed state, octavo size, 707 pp. This was writer Charles Dickens' (1812-1870) third novel, widely anticipated and loved. He is often considered the greatest of the Victorian era novelists, blending drama and comedy into compelling stories. In this novel Dickens explores the social issues that his works are known for, such as, harsh boarding schools, the privilege of royal title and wealth, social customs of the day and the plight of the working class. The plot focuses on the hardships courageously navigated by young Nicholas Nickleby after his father passes away. The extra illustrations provided were drawn by Joseph Kenny Meadows (1790 - 1874), best known for his drawings published in Punch magazine. He was a friend of Charles Dickens and several other writers of the period. These caricatures add a visual element to the characters depicted by Dickens [n.b. above information from Wiki]. ___DESCRIPTION: Half red morocco leather over marbled paper boards, six compartments on spine, five with gilt, title and author in gilt to one compartment, embossed decorative and gilt borders to front and rear boards, all edges marbled, frontis of a young Charles Dickens (supplied), thirty-nine plates by Hablot K. Browne ["Phiz"] and twenty-four plates of various characters in the novel by Kenny Meadows (the extra plates). This is a mixed state in that two of the first four plates have the Chapman and Hall imprint, further, the correction on p.123 has been made, but "latter" for "letter" still appears on p.160, line 43. Octavo size (8 1/2" by 5 1/2 "), [iii-vii] viii-xvi, [1 ] 2-624. ___CONDITION: Overall very good, internally this volume is quite clean, the text block is square, the hinges are sound and the gilt on the spine is bright. Rubbing to front and rear joints, corners rubbed, rubbing and slight loss to marbled papers on front and rear board, both front and rear hinge have been professionally repaired, prior owner bookplate with inscription of "To David from Dad", vintage bookseller stamp and prior owner notes in pencil to the front pastedown, offsetting from turn-ins to front and rear endpapers, 1/8" tear to margin of frontispiece, not affecting the image, lacking the half-title (hence our pagination begins with romanet iii), slight damage to the foredge of plate between pages 174 and 175, not affecting the image, the images have slight toning and foxing which is common. Even with these few flaws, a better than very good copy with extra illustrations by an artist whose work complements that of Phiz and adds interest to the story. ___CITATION: Podeschi A41, Eckel p. 64. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Price: US$1500.00 + shipping

Description: Bound by Bayntun in three-quarter red calf over cloth boards, all edges gilt. Spine a bid faded, internally an excellent copy. Complete with the half-title and all 40 plates engraved by Phiz. Likely washed at the time of binding (as most plates show little to no foxing). Most of Smith's internal flaws are found, including the ones of pgs. 123 and 160, only found in the earliest copies bound from the parts. Nicholas Nickleby, Dickens' third novel, was originally serialized in monthly parts, then issued as a book in cloth. The publishers also had a small number of copies bound up in the present morocco both for presentation - a census of copies inscribed by Dickens on publication show them all to be in the green morocco binding - and for sale to the public at a higher price. "Dickens' third novel has always been a favourite with the general public. Indeed, it was the book's huge sales that enabled Dickens to give up parliamentary reporting and become a full-time writer. The theatricality of the novel attracted new and more appreciative critical attention [and it] demonstrates the inextricable link between public and private" (Bannerjee). A satire tackling the injustices faced by both women and men within the Victorian class system that relied so heavily the social status of the patriarch, the novel follows Nicholas Nickleby as he seeks to support his mother and sister after his father's death. When Nicholas' father dies after losing all of the family's money, it is up to the young man to emerge as the new and more morally sound patriarch. Dashing and likable, Nicholas ultimately prevails, dodging shady characters along the way and securing a respectable life in Devonshire for his extended family. A favorite among Dickens' works, Nicholas Nickleby has been adapted into a much-loved film.

In June 1838 Grattan issued a series of forty etchings by Onwhyn, illustrating 'Nicholas Nickleby;' these also appeared in parts, which were concluded in October 1839; some are signed with the pseudonym of 'Peter Palette.' A book in Very Good condition indeed with excellent clean and clear illustrations without any significant foxing. Eckel 64-66

DICKENS, Charles.. The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby. With illustrations by Phiz.. London: Chapman and Hall, 1839, 1839.

Price: US$1602.48 + shipping

Description: First edition, bound from the parts, of one of Dickens's most politically pointed novels, from the library of William Foyle and in an attractive Samuel Tout binding. Nicholas Nickleby was written at the end of a turbulent decade, in which the Reform Act and Poor Law Amendment Act had led to widespread unemployment and depression, and published in the year of the first Chartist uprising at Newport. The edition was issued in monthly parts from April 1838 to October 1839, with sheets issued in book form on completion. This is a copy bound from the parts, with stab-holes. From 1868 to 1879, Samuel Tout (1841-1902) bound books in Soho, London. He then worked in Whitechapel with William Coward, continuing on his own after 1880. Tout was also an early member of the staff of Karslake's Hampstead Bindery, which opened in Charing Cross in 1898. Provenance: though unmarked as such, this copy comes from the collection of William Foyle (1883-1963), the co-founder of the eponymous chain of booksellers. Foyle's grandson acquired a substantial portion of the original collection at the landmark Foyle Library sale in 2000, including the present copy. Eckel, pp. 64-5; Smith I 5. Peter Ackroyd, Dickens, 1990. Octavo (208 x 130 mm). Late 19th-century half-morocco by Tout, spine with raised bands forming six compartments lettered and ruled in gilt, marbled paper sides and endpapers, all edges gilt, green silk bookmarker. Engraved portrait of Dickens after D. Maclise with facsimile signature, 39 plates by Phiz. With 19th-century armorial bookplate of Daniel Drew (1850-1914) of Burnley on front pastedown. Bound without the half-title. Light rubbing to extremities, faint sunning to spine, minor foxing to endpapers and contents, slight browning to content margins, 75 mm closed tear to plate 22, neatly repaired: a very good copy.

Description: First edition in book form, in a handsome Bayntun-Rivière binding. Dickens had been catapulted to fame with the success of The Pickwick Papers, and to secure his next novel Chapman and Hall offered Dickens £150 a part, a sum ten times greater than that which he had received for Pickwick. It met with great public enthusiasm, which has continued unabated: Dickens's biographer Peter Ackroyd remarks that the novel "has some title to being the funniest novel Dickens ever wrote; it is perhaps the funniest novel in the English language" (p. 262). Smith I.5. Peter Ackroyd, Dickens, 1990. Octavo (224 x 138 mm). Early 20th-century red morocco by Bayntun-Rivière, spine lettered and decorated in floral gilt compartments, raised bands, portrait of the author to front cover and facsimile signature blocked to the rear in gilt, single gilt fillet to boards, gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, gilt edges, binder's stamp to rear turn-in. Description: A rare copy of Nickleby in the original publisher's cloth. This copy without some of the earliest issue points: pg. 123 and pg. 160 with corrected spellings, first four plates without Chapman and Hall imprints. A Very Good copy with wear to the cloth along the lower spine hinge and at the board edges. Original yellow end-papers with some splitting at the inner hinges. Moderate foxing to the plates, pages generally clean. But on the whole, and authentic and attractive copy of the first edition in book form. Very Good.

Condition: Good

Description: This is a slightly unusual format in that the text has been rebound into two hardback volumes to accomodate the ninteeen front and rear covers of the original magazines which have been bound into the rear of both volumes along with some of the adverts. This has neccessitated the whole being bound in two volumes which are backed in light brown leather. Both volumes have recently had the boards professionally re attached using the original boards and decorative spines, the spines have been replaced on top of the spinal repair, the boards are in good order but the spines somewhat rubbed and worn. The title page in volume one is dated 1839 which indicates first edition in book form so it is unclear if the text is taken from the magazines or is a first in book form. The magazines are undated and are in nineteen parts, part nineteen also includes part twenty, all priced at one shilling apart from the last part which was two shillings for the double edition. All 39 plates and the frontespiece are present, some of the plates are quite mottled. The text itself is quite clean, there do not appear to be any loose pages. This is a heavy item and would require additional postage and insurance outside the UK. We would be happy to supply any further information, pictures etc on request, please do not hesitate to conatact us.

Description: First edition, earliest issue in book form bound by the publisher using sheets from the monthly parts with the issue points as called for on pages 123 and 160, also with the first state of the first four plates bearing the publisher’s imprint on bottom. Engraved portrait frontispiece, and 39 engraved illustrations by 'Phiz.' 8vo, beautifully bound by Wallis in full tan calf, the spine with gilt-stippled raised bands between fully gilt decorated compartments featuring panels tooled in gilt at the edges and corners and with gilt floral devices at the center, two compartments with contrasting red and green morocco labels lettered and ruled in gilt, all edges gilt, marbled endleaves. xvi, 624 pp. A beautiful copy, the binding especially handsome and very skillfully accomplished, internally quite fresh and clean and very solid. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, RARE IN SUCH FINE CONDITION. ONE OF DICKENS’ MOST GROUNDBREAKING NOVELS. NICHOLAS NICKLEBY rode on the coattails of the success of THE PICKWICK PAPERS, commissioned by Chapman and Hall in November of 1837 for £150 per monthly installment, which was ten times the amount Dickens had received for THE PICKWICK PAPERS. 1838 was an incredibly prolific year for Dickens; he worked on NICKLEBY concurrently with OLIVER TWIST and BARNABY RUDGE, eventually deciding that the latter must be postponed in the interest of producing quality work on the projects already undertaken. In addition to his fiction, that year he became the first editor of the periodical BENTLEY’S MISCELLANY, in which OLIVER TWIST appeared. The success of NICKLEBY benefited from Dickens’ established popularity: the serial began in April 1838 and sold 48,000 copies of the first installment. It ended in October 1839, and the bound edition followed within a few months of its completion. NICHOLAS NICKLEBY represents the beginning of Dickens’ lifelong warfare against the bad old methods of education. He deals with social abuses while still maintaining his characteristic good humor, attempting to address painful material while still "mak[ing] the reader mirthful over every detail that can be turned into merriment." His style of prose and character development ushered in a new school of intense realism of human portraiture, and helped him early on to secure a place as a great figure in the annals of classic literature.

Description: First edition of one of Dickens’ most popular novels. Octavo, bound in full morocco by Morrell, ornate inlay to the spine, front and rear panels, raised bands, inner dentelles, illustrated with 40 plates. In fine condition. Housed in a custom slipcase. An exceptional presentation. In 1867, Charles Dickens began his second American reading tour at Boston’s Tremont Temple, where an enthusiastic audience delighted in some of his most notable works, members of the audience included legendary literary stars such as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Although Dickens was in declining health, he embarked on an ambitious travel schedule across the United States. Dickens returned to Boston once more before concluding his U.S. tour in New York City. When Charles Dickens arrived in Boston on November 19, 1867, the celebrated English author spent several days at the Parker House hotel recuperating from the voyage. As conscientious a performer as he was a writer, Dickens had prepared diligently for his performances, redrafting and memorizing key passages from his books especially for these engagements. He used a book only as a prop; he was so familiar with the material that he could improvise with ease. However, during his 1867-1868 tour he was plagued with Flu-like symptoms, insomnia, and an inflammation of his foot, which forced him to walk with a cane. During his last tours in 1868, Dickens confined much of his performances to the New England area. Dickens was grateful for the income he desperately needed from his readings, which generated $140,000, close to $2,000,000 today; but he longed for home. On April 8, 1868, Dickens gave the last performance of the tour. Prolonged applause followed the reading. He closed by telling the audience, “In this brief life of ours, it is sad to do almost anything for the last time… Ladies and gentlemen, I beg most earnestly, most gratefully, and most affectionately, to bid you, each and all, farewell.” He died two years later, having written 14 novels, several of which are considered classics of English literature.

DICKENS, Charles.. The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby. With Illustrations by Phiz.. London: Chapman and Hall, 1839, 1839.

Price: US$3204.97 + shipping

Description: First edition, in the publisher's deluxe binding of half morocco, bound from the original monthly parts with the stab-holes visible. Nicholas Nickleby followed the phenomenal success which Dickens reached with the Pickwick Papers. To secure Nickleby Chapman and Hall offered Dickens £150 a part, a sum ten times greater than that which he had received for Pickwick. As with its predecessor, the novel met with great public enthusiasm, which has continued unabated: Dickens's biographer Peter Ackroyd stated that the novel "has some title to being the funniest novel Dickens ever wrote; it is perhaps the funniest novel in the English language" (Ackroyd, Dickens, pp. 262). Upon the completion of the novel in monthly parts, the novel was issued by the publishers in book form, in three binding choices: in cloth, in half morocco with marble edges, and in full morocco with gilt edges. They also made available (and advertised as such with an inset included with the final instalment of the part issue) their binding services, for the same three bindings, for owners of the parts: cloth at 1s., 6d., half morocco at 4s. 6d., and full morocco at 6s. 6d. (Kremers, pp. 286-7). It is worth noting that for an owner of the parts to have their parts bound was much cheaper than to buy a copy of the new book-form issue - to purchase a book-form copy in half morocco would cost the purchaser £1, 4s., 6d., four times as much as to bind up their parts. Copies bound from the parts, as opposed to book-form copies, can be distinguished by the presence of stab-holes in the gutter (as here) from the unstitching of the parts from their wrappers. For the book form, clean sheets were printed without bearing these holes. The binding services continued to be offered long after publication, both as the publisher bound up remaining first edition sheets for new issues (apparently as late as 1857 for Nickleby), and for private individuals to continue to make use of the binding services. The publishers offered the same binding services for future Dickens novels, and so the individual who had the parts issues of earlier Dickens novels could commission bindings for multiple novels simultaneously. Minor variation in tooling, cloth, and morocco occurred over time for these bindings, which can indicate earlier and later bindings, though the full sequence and firm dates have never been established. The presence of morocco-grain cloth on this copy indicates that it was bound around the 1850s, when Chapman and Hall begun to use morocco-grain cloth - they had until then predominantly used fine-diaper cloth. Lars Kremers, "A Comparative Bibliography of the Sheets and Publishers' Cloth Cases of the Demy Octavo Works of Charles Dickens, 1837-1872", PhD thesis, Curtin University, November 2013. Octavo (209 x 134 mm). Original purple half morocco, spine lettered in gilt, spine bands with gilt floral roll and bordered with blind rules, green morocco-grain cloth sides, marbled endpapers and edges. Engraved portrait frontispiece, 39 engraved plates by Hablot Knight Browne (Phiz). Complete with half-title. Spine sunned and a little rubbed, minor wear at tips, binding firm and intact, some light soiling to contents and minor browning to plates as usual, short closed tear at fore edge of plate facing p. 238. A very good copy.

Dickens, Charles. The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby. Chapman and Hall, London, 1839.

Price: US$5000.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Bound in the original publisher's deluxe full green morocco binding, gilt titles, stamped in gilt and blind, yellow end papers, all edges gilt. A Very Good copy with creasing and wear to the spine (one short tear at the head), some foxing to the plates. Armorial bookplate of Henry Gillett on the front paste-down. Bound without the half-title, otherwise complete with the engraved frontis and 39 plates by Phiz. This copy with most of the issue points outlined in Smith, but with a few typographical errors corrected. Very Good.
