Description: A first edition of William Makepeace Thackeray's later novel, The Newcomes. With twenty three plates to each volume A first edition of William Makepeace Thackeray's novel, The Newcomes, with twenty three plates to each volume. Best known for hist 1848 novel Vanity Fair, Thackeray's early satire and parodies were marked by attacks on high society, military prowess, and hypocrisy. Thackeray often wrote under various pseudonyms, as is the case with the present work where Pendennis, a character from another of his late novels, is positioned as the author and narrator of The Newcomes. This later work reflects a mellowing of Thackeray's tone, but is notable for its critical portrayal of the marriage market. With a small white sticker to the front pastedown of both volumes, depicting a swan. Rebound in quarter calf over green cloth boards. Externally, sound. Rubbed to the boards, with signs of water damage, and a dark mark to the rear board of volume I. The cloth to the front board of volume II is a little discoloured towards the top edge. A little worn to the head and tail of the spines, the joints, and the extremities. The front hinge is starting and a little tender in both volumes, and the rear hinge of volume I is starting, but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Foxed to the first few pages and around the plates. Good

Condition: Fair

Description: A first edition of William Makepeace Thackeray's 'The Newcomes' - two volumes in one. The novel tells the story of Colonel Thomas Newcome, a virtuous and upstanding character. It is equally the story of Colonel Newcome's son, Clive, who studies and travels for the purpose of becoming a painter, although the profession is frowned on by some of his relatives and acquaintances notably Clive's snobbish, backstabbing cousin Barnes Newcome. The colonel and Clive are only the central figures in The Newcomes, the action of which begins before the colonel's birth. Over several generations the Newcome family rises into wealth and respectability as bankers and begin to marry into the minor aristocracy. A theme that runs throughout the novel is the practice of marrying for money. Herein we find first use of the coined word "capitalism", as reference an economic system. Religion is another theme, particularly Methodism. The Newcomes was published serially over about two years, as Thackeray himself says in one of the novel's final chapters. The novel shows its serial origin: it is very long (an undated but clearly very old edition with tiny type fills 551 pages) and its events occur over many years and in several countries before the reader reaches the predictable conclusion. The main part of The Newcomes is set a decade or two after the action of Vanity Fair, and some of the characters in Vanity Fair are mentioned peripherally in The Newcomes. The narrator is Arthur Pendennis, the protagonist of Pendennis.William Makepeace Thackeray (1811 1863) was an English novelist of the 19th century. He was famous for his satirical works, particularly Vanity Fair, a panoramic portrait of English societyThe volume is illustrated throughout by Richard Doyle (1824 - 1883), a notable illustrator of the Victorian era. In a blue quarter-calf binding. Externally worn with some staining and wear to the extremities. Hinges tender, with rear board held by cords only. Some spotting throughout with tidemarks to some of the plates. Pages 81-82 detached. Cockling to textblock. Ink inscription to front free-endpaper and contents page. Fair

Bound in contemporary half calf over marbled boards, with dark blue title labels and gilt ornaments to spines. Both vols well rubbed in accordance with age, bindings firm and square. Dealer stamp of George Webb, Dublin, in both vols. and old signatures. A solid and unpretentious set. "The Newcomes is Thackeray's most essentially Victorian novel, generous in its proportions, sharp in its criticism of the moral convolutions of the age, and encyclopaedic in its reference. Set in the 1830s and 1840s, a period of rapid change and of political and economic development, the novel considers the fortunes and misfortunes of a 'most respectable' extended middle-class family. The action moves from London to Brighton, from England to France, from the political ambitions of an older generation in the industrial North to the painterly pretensions of a younger generation in Italy."

Binding is sound, condition overall good. A collectible copy. "Perhaps one of the novel's greatest strengths is that it contains hundreds of references to the popular and educated culture of the time and thus gives a better idea than most contemporary novels of what it was like to live in England then â_x0080__x0094_ almost a miniature education in the Victorian era. Thackeray mentions poets, painters, novelists (some of the characters are reading Oliver Twist), politics, and other people, events and things both familiar and obscure to the 21st-century reader â_x0080__x0094_ and does so in a natural way that enhances the story" (wiki) Illustrations by Richard Doyle. Doyle was a friend of Thackeray who had him illustrate several novels. From a famous family of illustrators, Richard was the "Uncle Dicky" of Arthur Conan Doyle's memoirs. Rather than depicting the â_x0080__x009c_lower classesâ_x0080__x009d_ in a condescending way, Richardâ_x0080__x0099_s observations of the crowds showed his intrigue and interest in their lives, which is unsurprising since they differed so greatly from his upbringing. He was most famous however for his fairy illustrations and his early work with Punch magazine; he drew the cover of the first issue, and designed the magazine's masthead, a design that was used for over a century.

Price: US$207.93 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: 2 vols., 8vo, [viii, 380pp] + [vii, 375pp], additional engraved title to each volume 46 engraved plates by Richard Doyle, contemp. full navy calf, gilt ruled borders, gilt decorated spines in compartments with contrasting morocco labels, slightly rubbed on extremities. A VG+ set. Thackeray's The Newcomes is a substantial novel, ostensibly a biography of the arriviste Newcome family "written by" Arthur Pendennis, another Thackeray character involved in this as well as other Thackeray works, and acting as something of a Greek chorus as the action develops. It is grand in scope, long as anything you are likely to pick up, at turns slow, suspenseful, touching, a period piece, personal, witty, a mirror on society, a travelogue, heartbreaking.but almost always deeply rewarding. The main themes of the work, however, are there throughout. In rigidly class-obsessed England there are ways to move up if one has money. New-money wants to be noble. The nobility allows itself to be courted and flattered. Those not rich have, in some ways, more options for self-expression through work and socially than those who are bound by societal expectations. Thackeray gives us characters from every station in life, many of them looking at their particular status in very different ways. New money families invent myths of their past glory to cover their insecurities, tracing family histories fabulously back to the Conquest. The most upright people of character make gross mistakes in judgement, bringing grief to many innocents. Debutantes revel in making their splash in society, only finally coming to realize the emptiness at its heart. Some of the heirs of good and not-to-good men struggle with their identities and future roles in life; others plunge into their assigned roles at once and in full. Money and position do not necessarily lead to happiness or contentment; some of the perpetually financially under water are among the most jolly, hearty and loyal. The role of religion is important; but some of the religious are humbugs. Battleaxes dominate some households, beating the weakened into submission by temper and anger; cruel husbands in loveless marriages abuse their wives emotionally and physically, and abandon their heirs. Some families are bound by respect and love, others torn apart by fear, mistrust, and greed. Some lovers find one another young, and are happy together; other lovers are separated for a half century by decisions made for practical, financial reasons. But the author's gentle (but persistent) criticism of Victorian society is there throughout: its pretensions, its hypocricies, its worldliness. It's not all negative: there is a great deal of culture, of learning, of genuine friendship, and industry and opportunity. Most people are forces, in general, for good. Thackeray can make his various points, raise his innumerable questions, without becoming sarcastic or grating.and all the while, inviting us to spend quite a number of hours with a cast of deeply human characters in a sweeping story that is well worth the investment of time it requires.
