Price: US$300.00 + shipping

Condition: Fair

Description: Folio. Cloth-backed pictorial boards. 31 leaves. Illustrated by Harry Otis Kennedy. First and only edition of this early work by Baum. It was published, along with its companion volume, The Army Alphabet, to coincide with the 34th annual encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic which took place in Chicago. This is a complete copy with all 28 color pictorial plates, the title page lettered in color and both front and rear blanks. The covers are soiled with some heavy chipping and edgewear. The text is good with some soiling in the margins, a few short edge tears and a few detached pages. The plates for the letters D, E & H have some heavy edge-chipping as do Y-Z and the last illustrated page. The chipping is in the margins and does not affect any of the color images themselves. In addition, plate E has a 3-inch closed tear at the left side and a tape repair to the reverse side at the top. Scarce.

Baum, L. Frank. THE NAVY ALPHABET. George M. Hill Company, Chicago, 1900.

Price: US$2750.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: First and only edition of this rare alphabet book, published the same year as Baum's breakout WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ. Early in 1900, Baum and Denslow's illustrated book of rhymes, FATHER GOOSE, became a surprise breakout hit as the best-selling picture book of the year. Its success paved the way for four more books by Baum the same year, including the NAVY ALPHABET and THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ. The luscious color plates of the NAVY ALPHABET, and indeed, the entire conceit of the work, was meant to piggyback on the success of Baum's book before Baum's meteoric rise as the creator of Oz. Very scarce in this condition. 12.25'' x 10''. Original quarter red cloth, paper pictorial boards. Leaves printed on rectos only, each with a large color-printed illustration by Harry Kennedy below alphabetical text in verse lettered by Charles Costello. Slight cover soil, edges rubbed a bit as usual, front hinge and corner of front blank endpaper repaired; a bit of marginal soiling here and there, else a nice clean copy.
