Description: Volume 1 only (of two). 33 cm; [8], xxiv, 740 [i.e., 742] pages, folding engraved map, hand-colored in outline, 5 engraved charts, 16 copper-engraved plates in black and white, 6 hand-colored lithographs, and 3 color-printed mezzotint plates of the polar night. Bound in original cloth and rebacked in 20th-century buckram with leather title-label laid down. Some ink migration of text through the paper, showing through behind plates. References: Arctic Bibliography 14866; Lande 1426; Sabin 73381. One of the fundamental volumes in the literature of polar exploration. Ross's second voyage is more significant from a historical perspective than his more famous first voyage. He pioneered the use of a shallow-draft paddle-wheel steamer that featured experimental technology, but which was largely unsuccessful. He charted fresh polar territory at Boothia that he named for his financial patron, Felix Booth. During a winter layover, Ross's nephew James Clark Ross became the first European to chart the North Magnetic Pole. The book is a sumptuous production, featuring vivid mezzotint plates showing scenes of the polar night.

Description: NARRATIVE OF A SECOND VOYAGE IN SEARCH OF A NORTH-WEST PASSAGE, and of a Residence in the Arctic Regions During the Years 1829, 1830, 1831, 1832, 1833. Including the Reports of Commander, now Captain James Clark Ross and The Discovery of the Northern Magnetic Pole. 1st Edition. xxxiii, (1), 740pp, iilustrated with 31 plates, including 6 maps and charts, some outlined in colour and 2 folding, 24 views, some hand coloured. Rebound in blue cloth with gilt titling to spine. After the embarrassment of Ross's first voyage in which he claimed to see the mountains in Lancaster Sound, it took him a decade to source private backing (he had lost the confidence of the British Admiralty) for a second trip. Ross travelled through Lancaster Sound into Prince Regent inlet and onto Boothia Peninsula, while on the way finding remnants of Parry's ship "Fury" which had been wecked on North Somerset Island. For three consecutive winters Ross and his men were stuck in ice, but used the time wisely to learn mapping, hunting, sewing, transportation and language from the local inuit. Ross also organized lectures, lessons, and scientific inquiries, one of which discovered the North Magnetic Pole. In 1832 Ross finally abandoned the ship, and managed to live on supplies found at Parry's wreck. A whaler rescued Ross and his crew in 1833, and remarkably, it was the same vessel which Ross had commanded on his first voyage. Arctic Bib 14866; Chavanne 1450; Sabin 73381.Browning, foxing and marking to plates, especially to the frontispiece and title pages, damp staining to some pages, the frontispiece and title page have been strengthened when the book was rebound. "As a result of the failure of his voyage in 1818, the Admiralty refused to support John Ross in a second. It was not until 1829 that the assistance of Felix Booth, the sheriff of London, enabled him to set out in the small paddle-steamer Victory with his nephew James Clark Ross as second-in-command." - (Hill) This second expedition spent four winters in the Arctic, and during this time James Clark Ross discovered the Northern Magnetic Pole. The younger Ross also edited the natural history section of the appendix, while John Ross was responsible for the sections on meteorology, navigation and ethnology. Vol. I bears the signature of J[ohn] Fletcher, Esq., Shiffnal, who was a subscriber and is on the Subscribers' List of the Appendix; the Appendix is inscribed "To J. Description: xxiv+740 pages with frontispiece, 24 plates (three of which are color printed mezzotints), 6 maps (two folding), errata leaf at front, without half-title, ads and addenda. Quarto (10 3/4" x 8 1/2") Early half purple morocco over pebbled cloth, the spine tooled and lettered in gilt with raised bands, the edges marbled. (Abbey Travel 636; Arctic Bibliography 14866; Sabin 73381) First edition. Admiral Sir John Ross was a British naval officer and Arctic explorer. He was the uncle of Captain Sir James Clark Ross, RN who explored the Arctic with him, and later led expeditions to Antarctica. In 1819, William Parry, his lieutenant on the previous expedition, returned to the Arctic, and sailed 600 miles west beyond the "Crocker Hills", thereby discovering the main axis of the Northwest Passage. Partly to redeem his reputation Ross proposed to use a shallow-draft steam ship to break through the ice. The Admiralty was not interested, but he was able to convince the gin-magnate Felix Booth to finance a second expedition. His ship was Victory, a side-wheel steamer with paddles that could be lifted away from the ice and an experimental high-pressure boiler built by John Ericsson. (The engine caused trouble and during the first winter it was dumped on the shore.) It carried four officers (Ross, James Clark Ross, William Thom and surgeon George McDairmid) and 19 men. The goal was Prince Regent Inlet at the west end of Baffin Island where Parry had lost his ship in 1825. Ross was frozen in southwest of the tip of the arrow and walked almost all the way north to escape. Ross left the Thames on 23 May 1829. Baffin Bay was unusually ice free and on 6 August 1829 he passed the point where he had turned back 10 years before. On 11 August 1829 he turned south into Prince Regent Inlet and on 13 August 1829 reached Fury Beach where Parry had abandoned his ship. The hulk was gone but there were heaps of stores on the beach, some of which he took. Continuing south he became the first European in the Gulf of Boothia, but by the end of September 1829 he was blocked by ice 200 miles south of Fury Beach. He took winter quarters at Felix Harbour at the eastern tip of the Boothia Peninsula (1st winter). In January 1830 a group of Netsilik Inuit arrived and provided food and information. In the spring of 1830 James Clark Ross made several trips west into the interior. On 9 April 1830 he reached the west side of the Boothia Peninsula and in May 1830 crossed over ice to the northwest shore of King William Island, assuming it was part of the mainland. It was mid-September 1830 before the ice broke part of its grip. The crew sawed through the shore ice and warped the ship into open water, but it was soon caught in ice. October 1830 was spent warping and sawing the ship into Sheriff Bay where they spent the 2nd winter only 3 miles from Felix Harbor. ames Clark Ross crossed the Boothia Peninsula and on 1 June 1831 became the first European to reach the North Magnetic Pole. In August 1831 the ship began to move but only got four miles before being trapped in Victoria Harbour (3rd winter). By January 1832 it was clear that the ship would never get out. Ross's plan was to drag the ship's boats north to Fury Beach, collect provisions there, find open water and hope to be rescued by a whaler. They left Victory on 29 May 1832. Ten days later James Clark Ross returned from Fury Beach and reported that Fury's boats were repairable, which spared them the labor of dragging the boats. They reached Fury Beach on 1 July 1832, left in three boats on 1 August 1832 and reached Barrow Strait at the end of August 1832. Finding an unbroken field of ice, they waited four weeks for the ice to melt, gave up, returned south, left their boats at Batty Bay and walked to Fury Beach (4th winter). On 8 July 1833 they left for Batty Bay and on 14 August 1833 saw open water for the first time. They left the next day and reached the head of Prince Regent Inlet. On 26 August 1833 they spotted a s

Description: First Edition. Illustrated. [8], xxxiii, [1], 740 pp. 1 vols. Thick 4to. "In 1829, frustrated by the lack of progress [in search of a northwest passage], a philanthropic gin distiller, Felix Booth, sponsored John Ross's second expedition. With his nephew James Clark Ross as second-in-command, Ross sailed down Prince Regent Sound in search of an opening to the west. The two Rosses mapped James Ross Strait and parts of King William Island and in 1831 James located the Magnetic North Pole. The Ross expedition then disappeared in the ice-bound Gulf of Boothia until 1833" (Goetzman & Williams, 186). A "wonderfully interesting narrative of human endurance, triumphing over the most awful peril and suffering. The sumptuous printing which makes every page a picture has even its luxury enhanced by the splendid steel engravings and lithographs. The former are so excellent as to be worthy of preservation as gems of art" (Field 1321). "Let no man imagine that he knows what a present is worth," Ross wrote, "until he has found what happiness can be produced by a blue bead, a yellow button, a needle, or a piece of an old iron hoop" (Lehane, 113). NOTE: In Jan. 1818 Ross was appointed to the 'Isabella' a hired whaler as commander of an expedition which with the 'Alexander' commanded by Parry sailed in April to endeavour to make the N. W. Passage through Davis Strait. It was the renewal of the search which had been laid on one side during the long war and resulted in the rediscovery of Baffin's Bay and the identification of the several points named in Baffin's map. Ross then attempted to proceed westward through Lancaster Sound but being deceived presumably by a mirage he described the passage as barred by a range of mountains which he named the Croker Mountains and returned to England. The report was in the first instance accepted as conclusive and Ross was promoted to Post rank on 7 Dec. 1818. Owing to the mistake however Ross was not employed again until 1829 when he was offered the command of the 'Victory' a small vessel fitted out mainly at the expense of Felix Booth and Ross himself. He was stopped by the ice south of Regent's Inlet and wintered there. The next summer he worked further south and in May 1832 had to abandon his ship trapped in the ice. Fortunately he and his crew reached the point where Parry's ship 'Fury' had been lost in 1825 and wintered in a hut built from the wreckage. In the summer of 1833 they were rescued by his old ship the whaler 'Isabella' in Lancaster Sound and returned to England. The voyage was remarkable for the length of time spent in the ice the survey of Boothia and the discovery of the N. Magnetic Pole by Ross' nephew James Clark Ross during an extensive sledge journey.

Description: [London]: A. W. Webster, [1835]. 1st edition. 4to. 8pp. Original brown wrappers, printed title. Near Fine. John Ross's privately funded expedition to find a Northwest Passage, embarking in 1829 on the Victory, a paddle-steamer with boilers fitted by John Braithwaite (an engineer whose locomotive engine Novelty was the first one ever to run a mile within a minute, and was entered into the Rainhill trials). The expedition foundered in ice in 1832. Ross, in his Narrative of a Second Voyage, put the blame on the inadequacy of the boilers, Braithwaite immediately responded in print in his misleadingly titled "Supplement." In the 8-page "Explanation and Answer" Ross replies with"feelings of contempt. because it is lamentable to perceive a tradesman, even of the second class, descending to such unbecoming language as Mr. Braithwaite has made use of ." outlining eight major defects of the engines. Ross outlines a list of the engine's failings, justifies his actions, and defends his character. [AB 14862]

Ross, Sir John. Explanation And Answer To Mr. John Braithwaite's Supplement To Captain Sir John Ross's Narrative Of A Second Voyage In the Victory In Search Of A North-West Passage. London A.W. Webster 1835, 1835.

Price: US$1869.94 + shipping

Description: Second Edition. 8pp. Quarto. Original printed brown wrappers with black lettering. Foxing on pages. Slight tear on the bottom right corner. Creased upper left corner. Small tear (1cm) on the right edge of the pamphlet. Otherwise in very good condition. A.B. 14862. This pamphlet is part of the pamphlet war between Ross and Braithwaite concerning the boilers on the Victory. The failure of Ross's Second Arctic Expedition was attributed to the boilers in Ross's "Narrative of a Second Voyage". Braithwaite defended his machinery in "Supplement to Captain Sir John Ross". Thus, in this particular pamphlet, Ross refutes Braithwaite's defense of the reliability of his boilers. There are two issues of this pamphlet. This example, with a blank verso on the outer wrapper, states in a letter to the editor of The Times, that Ross would provide gratis a copy of his pamphlet to any of just about anyone that would want a copy. This perhaps explains why Ross's pamphlet is much more common than Braithwaite's. The second issue has an extra advertisement on the rear of the front wrapper for Ross's Narrative and the Appendix which appeared much later. At the bottom of the page Ross indicates he will include a free copy of the pamphlet with every supplement. An interesting and rare arctic pamphlet.

The contents with a little looseness at the gutter of the frontispiece, some occasional light scattered foxing (a little heavier to a few of the black and white plates) and a touch of offsetting to the map, are otherwise in very good order, clean throughout and remain free from any previous owners' inscriptions or stamps. An attractive copy in entirely original condition. The first edition of Sir John Ross's wonderfully illustrated account of his second Arctic expedition. "As a result of the failure of his voyage in 1818, the Admiralty refused to support John Ross in a second expedition. It was not until 1829 that the assistance of Felix Booth, the sheriff of London, enabled him to set out in the small paddle-steamer 'Victory' with his nephew James Clark Ross as second-in-command. The expedition survived four winters in the Arctic, during which James Clark Ross discovered the North Magnetic Pole" (Hill, p.261). After the embarrassment of Ross's first voyage in which he claimed to see the mountains in Lancaster Sound, it took him a decade to source private backing (he had lost the confidence of the British Admiralty) for a second trip. Ross travelled through Lancaster Sound into Prince Regent inlet and onto Boothia Peninsula, while on the way finding remnants of Parry's ship "Fury" which had been wrecked on North Somerset Island. Arctic Bib 14866; Chavanne 1450; Sabin 73381. After his expedition for the Admiralty in 1818, John Ross reported that both Smith Sound and Lancaster Sound were enclosed by mountains, a mistake for which he was later severely criticised. When the Admiralty rejected his plan to use a steamship to explore Prince Regent Inlet, Ross gained the private sponsorship of the gin merchant Sir Felix Booth for his second expedition from 1829 to 1833. With his nephew James Clark Ross as second-in-command, Ross crossed Boothia Isthmus (named after his new patron) and reached the magnetic pole but was forced to abandon ship because of scurvy and because the ship was beset by ice. The Rosses and their crew spent four harrowing winters in the Arctic before the whaler Isabella eventually picked them up in Lancaster Sound.

Narrative and scientific results of a private expedition sponsored by Felix Booth under Sir John Ross to discover a northwest passage by way of Baffin Bay, Lancaster Sound and Prince Regent Inlet. He made his way to Boothia Peninsula in the 'Victory' and returned by sledge, boat and the 'Isabella.' The appendix has an extensive list of subscribers. A nice matched set with Appendix volume being a slightly different shade of blue. Very difficult to get a matched set in the original cloth and in large paper. Ross's narrative certainly was a best seller in its day and is probably the most common title one can find from the Golden age of Arctic Exploration.

Description: First Edition, presented here in its large paper format, untrimmed. With 30 engraved plates and charts, a third of which are hand-coloured, including the large folding map of discoveries made in the Arctic region. Royal 4to, in the publisher's original binding of blue patterned muslin cloth, the spine lettered in gilt within a gilt framework label of maritime motif, binder's ad slip tipped in at front free-fly, edges untrimmed. xxxiii, 740 pp. A truly exceptional copy, as pristine and unrestored and as printed, bound and published with little evidence of wear and no evidence of any repairwork whatsoever. Several quires remain unopened, the textblock is extremely fresh, the inevitable foxing being only very occasionally evident and even then very light though a bit more prevalent at the prelims as usual, the hinges are strong and firm and the binding shows only light evidence of age, especially so for such a delicate cloth used on such a large and heavy text. A TRULY EXTRAORDINARY COPY, VERY SCARCE UNRESTORED IN THIS LARGE FORMAT AND IN THE ORIGINAL DELICATE MUSLIN CLOTH. The book is normally encountered extensively repaired at the joints and hinges, while this wonderful, large-margined copy is in excellent condition showing almost no evidence of age or wear at all. "Another of those wonderfully interesting narratives of human endurance, triumphing over the most awful peril and suffering. The sumptuous printing which makes every page a picture, has even its luxury enhanced by the splendid steel engravings and lithographs. The former are so excellent as to be worthy of preservation as gems of art." (Field/Lesser) "As a result of the failure of his voyage in 1818, the Admiralty refused to support John Ross in a second. It was not until 1829 that the assistance of Felix Booth, the sheriff of London, enabled him to set out in the small paddle-steamer Victory with his nephew James Clark Ross as second-in-command. The expedition survived four winters in the Arctic during which James Clark Ross discovered the North Magnetic Pole." (Hill p. 261) "Despite the failure of his trip in 1818, Ross set out in 1829 in the small ship, Victory, to find a northwest passage, but the vessel had to be abandoned in 1832. Ross and his party were rescued in the summer of 1833 in Lancaster Sound. In the meantime, Capt. George Back had set out in search of Ross. Back's account of his explorations was published the year after this volume appeared. The greatest scientific yield of the trip was the discovery of the North Magnetic Pole. The many attractive plates are listed in detail in Abbey. A number of them depict the natives and events during the voyage." (Reese)

With the armorial bookplate of James Whatman, Jr. "Narrative and scientific results of expedition to Boothia Peninsula in the Victory, and return by sledge, boat, and the Isabella" (Arctic Bibliography). The Victory was iced in at the Boothia Peninsula; the expedition team spent three winters on board ship and two summers trying to free the ship. The remaining party eventually escaped, travelling northward along the Boothia coast, wintering on Somerset Island, and reached Captain Ross' former ship, the Isabella. His nephew, James Clark Ross, made a series of sledge trips across the Boothia peninsula and discovered the North Magnetic Pole. "As a result of the failure of his voyage in 1818, the Admiralty refused to support John Ross in a second. It was not until 1829 that the assistance of Felix Booth, the sheriff of London, enabled him to set out in the small paddle-steamer Victory with his nephew James Clark Ross as second-in-command" (Hill). First Edition. Owing to his mistaken contention after his first voyage in 1818, that Lancaster Sound was landlocked, Ross was not offered command of another Arctic expedition until 1829. Although this expedition failed in its primary objective, it resulted in the discovery of King William Island and the extensive survey of Boothia Peninsula, as well as the discovery of the magnetic pole by Ross' nephew James Clark Ross. A large collection of minerals was gathered and the dietary importance of fresh meat and oil in the arctic climate was ascertained. All but three men managed to survive four arctic winters and the loss of their ship. Upon their return to England, Ross was knighted and awarded gold medals by the Geographical Societies of London and Paris. Abbey, Travel, 636. Arctic Bib. 14866. Hill p. 261. Lande 1426. Sabin 73381.
