Spine covering has darkened with small tear {3/4 in.} in upper third of back cover hinge. Front cover has a worn hole in cloth showing underboard directly above "N" in Napoleon, {about 1/2 in squared} frayed cloth ends. All corners bumped, mostly bottom corners with board showing. Owner's detailed gift inscription on fep, dated 1931. Text has yellowed slightly with age, light spotting of textblock edges. Description: The First UK printing published by Methuen, London in 1924. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. Light pushing at the spine ends. A little light rubbing at the corners. Gilt titling and decorations to the spine and boards remains bright. Free from inscriptions and erasures. Light offsetting to the end-papers. Some toning and spotting to the text-block. Light toning to the extreme page edges. with a little light spotting to the prelims. The WRAPPER is in Very Good- condition with mild edge wear and loss at the spine ends (see images. Large closed tears to the lower spine folds and a smaller one to the upper rear flap fold. Some toning to the spine and folds. Despite the issues, the wrapper presents well in the removable Brodart archival cover. The 16 B/W plates are present and clean. A very scarce title with such attributes and a very early historical biography from the author who went on to write the 'Hornblower's series and 'The African Queen'. Collectible.
