Description: First UK Edition (first printing), just preceded by the US edition. 8vo. 192pp. Re-bound into red cloth with black lettering and rule, with new marbled endpapers. Cloth lightly rubbed and marked in places. The top edge lightly soiled, and with a place-marker crease to the tip of one text leaf. A good bright copy. No dust wrapper. A detective / espionage novel set during the Second World War (and the first of the author's novels to feature the mature versions of her detectives Tommy and Tuppence).

The dust wrapper, designed by Thompson, has not been price clipped and shows the original 7s. 6d net price. The spine is slightly worn and toned and with mild wear at the top and tail edges. The rear panel is remarkably clean and mostly free from handling marks. The boards are mostly free from chips and marks, but the spine is faded. There is a slight crease to the front fly leaf, but the book is free from inscriptions. Overall, this is a near fine copy with a very good dust wrapper. The novel is the first to feature the mature versions of her detectives Tommy and Tuppence, whose previous appearances had been in the adventure The Secret Adversary (1922) and the short story collection Partners in Crime (1929).
