Description: viii with half-title, (1)pp. ad, double-paged map, 163pp., 32pp. ads at rear, bound in dark blue pictorial cloth stamped in brown, floral endpapers, from the library of William S. Dalliba (1847-1921), a 50 year veteran of American Express in the United States and Europe and was president of the American Chamber of Commerce 1905-1906. He lived and died in Southern California. This is one of the author's more scarce works. Herbert Ward also authored Five Years with the Congo Cannibals, among others. A very nice copy showing light edge wear; near fine. The author, Herbert Ward, was recruited by H. M. Stanley to rescue Emin Pasha from the Mahdi. This expedition, including the rear guard, was not successful; there were a number of casualties. Consequently, Ward and others felt they had been maligned for their participation in the venture. So this is Ward's account and his contribution to the history of European intervention in Africa.

Ward, Herbert. My Life With Stanley's Rear Guard. Chatto and Windus, London, 1891.

Price: US$764.21 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: After 10 years in Africa, much of it spent in the Congo, the author decided, in 1887, to return to England As he prepared to leave he was recruited as as an officer in the reaguard party to an expedition mounted by Stanley, (of Livingstone fame) to rescue Emin Pasha from thje Mahdi. This venture, together with the associated rear guard, was something of a fiasco, with considerable bloodshed as well as much bungling. As a consequence, Ward and others, felt they had been maligned for their part in the episode. In his introduction to his book Ward sa that: "Much against my will I have been dragged into the dispute" and had decided to publish what he knew about the rear guard, so that "fair and impartial judgement can be made." Here then is a book written with the aim of "putting the other side of the story," while adding to the history of European intervention in "Darkest Africa." This is a scarce book in its original printing. First edition of 1891, 163 pages, followed by 32 pages other titles from Chatto and Windus, double page map at front. Dark blue hard covers are VG with red front and spine titles, front decoration (jungle vegetation) and red decoration centre back board, with two small bubbles front cover, light wear to corners, floral patterned e/papers, ink name/date ('91) top right title page, small portrait of author laid in on dedication page with ink note died 1919", text block is excellent.
