Description: This copy is in fine condition bound in oatmeal cloth covered boards with titling to an impressed paper label to the upper board. This copy is bright, tight, white and square. There is an attractive bookplate to the front paste down. The unclipped dust wrapper has some edge wear and one or two closed tears so best described as near fine condition. International postal rates are calculated on a book weighing 1 Kilo, in cases where the book weighs more than 1 Kilo increased postal rates will be quoted, where the book weighs less then postage will be reduced accordingly. This attractive book has a frontis and fourteen fine tipped in colour plates with pencil sketches to lower margins. Lionel Edwards (9 November 1878 – 13 April 1966) was a British artist who specialised in painting horses and other aspects of British country life. He is best known for his hunting scenes but also painted pictures of horse racing, shooting and fishing. He provided illustrations for Country Life, The Sphere, The Graphic and numerous books. Description: First Edition (first printing). 4to. xiii, 22pp. Beige cloth with a very slightly spotted inset paper title label to the upper board. With a frontispiece and fourteen colour plates with text to the adjacent versos plus a five-page preface ("In every case these sketches were painted out of doors, and in winter - which is a very different thing, I might add, from that delightful pastime known as 'sketching' by the amateur under summer skies!") Cloth very lightly spotted, and with some further fox-spotting throughout, although the bulk of this is confined to the unprinted inter-plate leaves and many of the plates themselves are almost entirely spared. A very good copy in dust wrapper, tanned at the spine panel and a little worn and nicked at the edges with several short tears and accompanying creases, and a little loss from the spine panel ends. Edwards issued a second volume of his hunting sketches two years later.

Lionel Edwards (1878-1966) was a British artist who specialized in painting horses and other aspects of British country life. He is best known for his hunting scenes but also painted pictures of horse racing, shooting and fishing. He provided illustrations for Country Life, The Sphere, The Graphic and numerous books. His artistic output was remarkable: he wrote almost 30 books and illustrated many more, including editions of Black Beauty, Lorna Doone and The Black Arrow, in addition to numerous private commissions. He became a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy of Art in 1926 and the Royal Institute in 1927. His favorite medium was watercolor, although he used oils more in his later years.
