Price: US$41.59 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Inscribed, on title page to Jeffrey and Jaqui Kwintner. Jeffrey founded the Village Press in the UK which published a number of books by Henry Miller and was a friend of both Miller and Perles. Book is bumped to spine ends with a tear to the cloth at base of front board. Slight splaying to boards. Internally there is some curious light, and minor creasing across the first 6 leaves. It has to be a production flaw as it would not be possible to make these creases once the book was bound up. I tried to show it in an image but it wouldn't show up. The jacket's not great, it has loss at spine ends and corners and wear to hinges. Postage will be confirmed when you enquire or order and for light or very heavy books will vary from the ABE quote which is based on a 1kg parcel. N.B. Postage to the USA will often be quite a bit less than the quote on ABE.

Description: Henry Miller (1891--1980) was an American novelist He broke with existing literary forms and developed a new type of semi-autobiographical novel that blended character study, social criticism, philosophical reflection, stream of consciousness, explicit language, sex, surrealist free association, and mysticism His most characteristic works of this kind are Tropic of Cancer, Black Spring, Tropic of Capricorn, and the trilogy The Rosy Crucifixion, which are based on his experiences in New York and Paris (all of which were banned in the United States until 1961) He also wrote travel memoirs and literary criticism, and painted watercolors Alfred Perlà s (1897â₠"1990) was an Austrian writer (in later life a British citizen), who was most famous for his associations with Henry Miller, Lawrence Durrell, and Anaà s Nin He was part of a vibrant Parisian literary scene that included Miller, Lawrence Durrell, and Anaà s Nin, as well as Antonin Artaud, Michael Fraenkel, Hans Reichel and others Anaà s Nin writes that she first met Alfred Perlà s in April, 1932 Miller and Durrell often referred to Perlà s as "Joe" or "Joey" Some of these writers were featured in a magazine called The Booster, which Perlà s co-published in 1936, along with Miller, Durrell, and Nin In 1939, with the start of World War II the group broke apart, as Miller moved on to Greece and Perlà s fled to England (where he applied for, and was granted, British citizenship) A few years later, Perlà s wrote a piece about this pre-War circle in Henry Miller at Villa Seurat (featured in The Happy Rock anthology, 1945, and republished by the Village Press as a chapbook in 1973)Perlà s and Miller maintained a lifelong friendship Miller visited Perlà s in the UK and Perlà s visited Miller in Big Sur, California, where he wrote My Friend Henry Miller (written in 1954/55) Miller wrote a tribute to Perlà s in the memoir Joey This near fine copy has only very slight fading at the lower edges The binding is tight and sound The author has inscribed the book on the half title "For Rachel Severn, with my sympathy From (Alfred Perles)" There are no other marks or damage at all The unclipped DJ has some chipping along the top edge, but is otherwise undamaged 242 pp.

PERLES, Alfred.. My Friend Henry Miller: an intimate biography. With a preface by Henry Miller.. Neville Spearman,, 1955.

Price: US$259.91 + shipping

Description: First edition. Plates. Inscribed by the author on half-title, 'To Rab Shiell, with kindest regards, Alfred Perlés, Hampstead, June, 1960', with Shiell's earlier ownership signature, dated 'Cape Town 1959'. Spine very lightly faded, free endpapers slightly browned, else a very good copy. Loosely inserted are six t.l.s. from Perlés (only one letter bears a date, May 21st 1960, but they are clearly all from the same year) and a photo of him in a tweed jacket and a bow tie. 'I am busy at odd hours in a Fleet Street news agency, as I still have to work for a living!' he writes in his second letter. Though there are passing references to J.G. Farrell and Ian Hamilton, the main focus of these jovial letters is a party to which Shiell has invited Perlés. 'I hope Clive Jordan isn't under the impression he has to do a spot of pimping for me!', Perlés exclaims. 'Reassure him, will you? There's still a thing or two I can do for myself.' As a postscript, he adds, 'I hope I'm not expected to dress up! I've got a dark suit but I look like an idiot in it. Will ordinary attire do —I mean a pullover, say a bottle-green one?' The final letter thanks Shiell for 'an exceptionally unforgettable evening', asks for a repeat at his own house, 'we want the lot of you', and asks him to tenderly embrace 'the lovely strong-frail nurse who reminds me a little of Brigitte Bardot but in a much more refined version.'
