The volume is lightly bumped on ther corners, pushed on the spine ends with shallow tears on the crown, the spine is mildly sunned, and the spine gilt is totally effaced, rendering the lettering difficult to read. There are also faint tidemarks on the front and rear panels next to the spine, showing through faintly on the front and rear endpapers and pastedowns (noticeable on the rear pastedown, however). Price: US$422.55 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: [vi], 433pp. Wells' masterpiece of the wartime experience in south eastern England (to quote Wikipedia). A very nice copy with no soiling. There is foxing to the closed edges of the text block, some spots encroaching a few mm onto the page edges. There is some tanning to the endpapers, a partially erased name to the front endpaper, and a neat ownership name to the front pastedown. Firm, in the original binding of dark green cloth, decorated in blind, all fresh and bright, including the gilt spine title. The tips of the upper corners are slightly knocked. In the protected light brown dust jacket, printed with the title and an orange feather to the front panel. There are indentations just above 'Britling' to the front panel, but the board beneath is not affected. The spine is a little darkened, and knocked at the head, and there are small nicks to the ends of the joints. There is a one-inch closed tear to both the top of the lower joint and the top of the rear flap fold: these were formerly repaired with Sellotape, which has darkened the reverse, inner surface of the jacket, while the outer surface is unaffected. These small damages have now been made good with archival tissue. A very nice copy. (More photographs of this book can be seen on my website)

Wells, H. G.. Mr. Britling Sees It Through. Cassell and Company Ltd, London, 1916.

Price: US$500.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: A Fine copy of the book, extremely clean and bright on account of the original dust jacket. Dust jacket Near Fine with only trivial signs of use and age. A work from Wells' middle career period, when his novels became "discussions of social or political themes that showed little concern for the novel as a literary form.Mr. Britling Sees it Through, though touched by the prejudice and short-sightedness of wartime, gives a brilliant picture of the English people in WWI. World War I shook Wells' faith in even short term human progress, and in subsequent works he modified his conception of social evolution, putting forward the view that man could only progress if he would adapt himself to changing circumstances through knowledge and education" (Britannica). In this sense, the novel marked a major shift in Wells' career. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.

H. G. Wells. Mr. Britling Sees it Through. Cassell and Company, Ltd, London, 1916.

Price: US$501.87 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Green cloth with title and author on the spine in gilt, with blindstamped borders and decorations, blindstamped lettering and decorated borders to the front board, in buff dustwrapper with black lettering and feather across the front panel in orange. 433 pages, 7.75 X 5.5 inches. The book is very good with the top corners stubbed, pages edges a little browned, an dtop edge dutsoiled. The gilt lettering is bright, and the binding sound and solid with hinges firm and the endpapers all intact. All pages clean and unmarked throughout. The dustwrapper has some wear to the corners and spine ends through rubbing, and shows age darkening or dustsoiling chiefly on the spine, but also somewhat to the margins. On the whole quite a good example, and is unpriced.
