Price: US$385.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: First edition. Navy blue cloth lettered in yellow. Patterned endpapers. 349 pp. Novel of a group of self-impressed social non-entiities (boring, buzzing parasites, hence the title) aboard the yacht of a New Orleans matron. In this early novel, Faulkner revealed a more witty, urbane side, producing a work much different from the grim "Soldier's Pay" and "Sound and The Fury". Very good example, some rubbing to the spine lettering, tiny previous owner's signature top corner of the verso of the front free endpaper. Supplied is the dust jacket from the circa 1950 "New Edition" published by Liveright after Faulkner won the Nobel Prize. The jacket features the deco-styled illustration of the characters playing cards aboard the yacht and is in fine condition.

Faulkner, William. Mosquitoes. Boni and Liveright, New York, 1927.

Price: US$4250.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: 1st edition of the Nobel Laureate's 2nd novel. Fine (the yellow lettering is not flaked). 1st printing dustjacket (the 2nd printing cardplayers jacket is much rarer), some rubbing and a 3/8" tear else near fine. Cheaper than any copy close to this fine, and finer than any copy close to this cheap. Mosquitoes is Faulkner before he deserved applause, but it set him up to become what he became. In it he confines a mismatched group on the yacht of a matronly, literary lion hunter and feeds none of their appetites, so we learn that characters wrapped up in themselves make very small packages.

Seller: Biblioctopus, Los Angeles, CA, U.S.A.

Faulkner, William. MOSQUITOES. Boni and Liveright, New York, 1927.

Price: US$4500.00 + shipping

Description: First edition of Faulkner's Huxleyesque satire on sex, swamps, artists, and boats, featuring an ungenerous portrayal of Sherwood Anderson as "Dawson Fairchild, the novelist, resembling a benevolent walrus." Faulkner's second novel took the then-fashionable form of stranding a small group of reprehensible sophisticates in intolerable circumstances and forcing them to have arch conversations with one another until rescue arrived or the book ended, whichever came first. Though rarely ranked among the author's greatest works, MOSQUITOES "owes its messiness more to uncertain intention and undisciplined exuberance than to ignorance, spite, or vacuity" (Yamaguchi). An attractive copy. 7.25'' x 5.25''. Original blue cloth with yellow lettering. Decorative blue endpapers. In original price-clipped red and green dust jacket. 349, [1] pages. Minor scuffing and a few tiny chips to jacket, spine toned. Light edgewear to boards. Interior clean.

Faulkner, William. Mosquitoes.. Boni & Liveright, Inc, New York, 1927.

Price: US$4800.00 + shipping

Description: First edition of Faulkner's second novel. Octavo, original cloth, pictorial endpapers. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with a small chip to the front flap. From the library of Virginia bibliophile and historian Christopher Clark Geest with his bookplate to the pastedown. A very nice example of this early Faulkner work. On a yacht on Lake Pontchartrain, a diverse group of strangely associated people including a social climber, famous writer, sculptor, and Englishman embark on a four-day excursion from the city of New Orleans. Evidently inspired by an similar excursion from Faulkner's own life, the novel offered a tongue in cheek criticism of the repetitive and mundane preoccupations of the New Orleans creative community Faulkner was immersed in at the time.

Price: US$5500.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: A Fine copy of the book in a Near Fine dust jacket. One small tear at the crown repaired on the verso with tape. Spine a bit toned, otherwise a fresh example. Housed in a custom clamshell box. Faulkner's second novel, Mosquitoes provides "a fascinating glimpse of the author as a young artist.introducing us to a colorful band of passengers on a boating excursion from New Orleans. This engaging, high-spirited tale -- which Faulkner wrote 'for the sake of writing because it was fun' -- provides a delightful accompaniment to his more canonical works" (Norton). On its release, Lillian Hellman declared Mosquitoes "full of the kind of swift and lusty writing that comes from a healthy, fresh pen" (NY Herald Tribune). Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.
