Burroughs, Edgar Rice. THE MOON MAID. A. C. McClurg & Co., Chicago, 1926.

Price: US$8500.00 + shipping

Description: Octavo. pp. [1-8] 1-412, inserted frontispiece with illustration by J. Allen St. John. jacket illustration by J. Allen St. John, Original blue cloth, front and spine panels stamped in brown. Considered by some critics the best of Burroughs science fiction stories. The magazine versions were re-written for the book publication. It is a future history/future war/alien invasion story. After a world war which finally ends in 1967 a peaceful world turns to space and lands on the Moon. Unfortunately the Moon is inhabited by an unfriendly race and a evil genius on earth links with them and eventually the Earth is invaded and becomes subjugated. Civilization in the U.S. descends into nomadic tribes. Anatomy of Wonder (1987) 2-11; (1995) 2-11; and (2004) 11-193. Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 334. Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 1870s-1930s 112. In 333. Bleiler (1978), p. 35. Reginald 02298. Heins MMa-1. A fine copy in bright, nearly fine dust jacket with two small closed tears to upper spine panel (one at front fold) and several along top edge of rear panel and mild dust soiling to spine and rear panels. There are two faint, partial blue horizontal lines along top and bottom edges of front and rear panels (offset from an old jacket "protector"). The offset here is mostly internal, with virtually no show through on outer surface. A beautiful example of a very scarce jacket never touched by a paper conservationist. (31181)
