Here is the great artist with his tongue very firmly in his cheek as evidenced by the books dedication to 'All virtuous young ladies who pose unadorned for honest artists' To his short preface 'This is a paradoxical book. None of the statements are true. None of the people are real, Yet all the ladies are drawn from life' The drawings are of course breath taking examples of the artist's draughtsmanship. Ref J6

" Dear Emmanuel, Many thanks for cheque £5.07 + voucher on Caldbeck Avenue Mortgage. I'm so glad you like my little 'Models of Propriety'. Of course it is all entirely my own - all except the few poetical quotations, those which acknowledged. It was my "escape" when my wife was ill. The entire layout, choice of type, binding, wrapper + arrangement of every page is mine. I had the letter press set up + the photogravures made at my own expense. By chance Michael Joseph saw text only + offered to take over all my commitments + publish it, giving me a good royalty. I agreed + it was "out of print" on publication date. It is now being reprinted! Quite a succesful venture. All Kind regards - + to Gould { Not sure it is Gould - see image } 75 p. : ill. ; { Subject: Flint, William Russell Sir 1880-1969. Price: US$88.37 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: A charming first edition copy of Sir William Russell Flint's 'Models of Propriety' complete with coloured prints of sketches by the author. Containing supposedly fictional anecdotes of artists models, this text is dedicated to 'all virtuous young ladies who pose unadorned for honest artists'. In an unclipped dustwrapper. Sir William Russell Flint was a Scottish illustrator and artist well known for his watercolour paintings of women. Although achieving considerable success, he produced illustrations for notable works such as H Rider Haggard's 'King Solomon's Mines' (in the 1907 edition) and Chaucer's 'The Canterbury Tales (1912), many art critics were disturbed and critical of his supposed 'crassness' within his art and frequently deemed his depictions of the female form as overtly eroticized. In publisher's original cloth binding in the original unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, excellent with just minor shelfwear only. Small handling mark to the lower extremity of front board. Slight bumping to tail of spine. Offsetting to the rear free endpaper Dustwrapper is generally smart. Bumped to the extremities and head and tail of spine resulting in some chipping and closed tears. The odd handling mark and spot to front and rear of wrap. Internally generally firmly bound. Pages very bright and very clean throughout, with the odd light spot to the first and last few pages. Chalk marks to pages 48 and 49. Near Fine
