Price: US$100.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: Mistress Pat, A novel of Silver Bush, by L. M. Montgomery, McClelland & Stewart Limited, Toronto.1935. This is the first edition but there are several variants of this edition. One version has silver wording and a frontispiece. Another has copper wording. This copy has black wording and no frontispiece. There is a fair bit of confusion re priority based upon the description of other dealers who have a copy of this book listed. I make no claim as to priority and therefore this is reflected in my pricing. Lucy Maud Montgomery OBE (1874 – 1942), published as L. M. Montgomery, was a Canadian author best known for a series of novels beginning in 1908 with Anne of Green Gables. The book was an immediate success. The central character, Anne Shirley, an orphaned girl, made Montgomery famous in her lifetime and gave her an international following. The first novel was followed by a series of sequels with Anne as the central character. Montgomery went on to publish 20 novels as well as 530 short stories, 500 poems, and 30 essays. In terms of sales, both in her lifetime and since, Montgomery was the most successful Canadian author of all time. This book, 338 pages, is in near fine condition in a good dust jacket, that is now in a protective mylar wrap. There is a personal presentation on the front endpapers dated Xmas, 1944.

MONTGOMERY, L. M.. MISTRESS PAT; A Novel of Silver Bush. McClelland & Stewart, Toronto, 1935.

Price: US$131.25 + shipping

Description: pp. 338. 8vo. Bound in original green cloth with copper-coloured lettering. The book we are offering has a slight spine slant and a touch of discoloration to the outer edge of the front board. Faint former owner's name to top of front free endpaper. Erasure mark to rear pastedown. Binding tight. Contents unmarked. The dust jacket is torn and creased but virtually totally intact save for some small loss to the seam of a close tear at the top. It shows some scuffing with wear to the hinges. Two small red smudges to rear panel. Still in fair to good condition and now seldom seen. Top edge not stained green as stipulated by Lechowick, 'A Collector's Guide to L. M. Montgomery First Editions' (p. 113), but ten titles listed verso title page. Spadoni & Donnelly 1154 note that there are several apparent variants of the first edition, albeit later printings, as they bear a coloured frontispiece. Our copy does not have a frontispiece. However, it does have the publisher's original dust jacket, similar in appearance to that shown in 'Editions & Impressions / Collectors and Their Love of the Works of L. M. Montgomery' (which is the jacket for the first American edition).
