Verne, Jules. Mistress Branican [The Mystery of the Franklin]. Sampson Low, Marston, London, 1895.

Price: US$1275.00 + shipping

Description: Very rare Jules Verne novel, undated but published in 1895. This is the second printing (New & Cheaper Edition) of a book which first appeared in England in 1892 (Taves & Michaluk VO38). Publisher's grey cloth pictorially blocked in black, 2 shades of blue, pink and gilt. The illustrations to cover and spine are quite different from those featured on the first edition binding though the eccentric gilt lettering is retained. Numerous bound in plates by L. Benett including tissue-guarded frontis., none reckoned in the pagination and with no list of plates. Original pale yellow coated endpapers, plain edges. The book is perfectly sound with just occasional light finger-marking to margins. The spine is dulled with slight rubbing to blocked illustration but lettering still legible. A good, sound copy of a desperately scarce book. In my 20 years' experience of collecting and dealing in Verne I would rate this title on a par with the legendary rarity 'Foundling Mick', which was first published in UK in 1895. No copies of the first or of this cheaper edition have been offered on ABE in the past 5 years at least and this is the only copy of this edition (the binding of which appears never to have been described) that I've ever seen. Scan of the cover sent on request.
