This text is said to include field science alongside 'exceptionally sympathetic descriptions of African people'.David Livingstone was a famous British physician, explorer, and Christian missionary. "Perhaps the most famous of all African exploration books, this recounts Dr. Livingstone's travels through South Africa, with the discovery of Lake Ngami, while accompanied by his wife and William Cotton Oswell. Oswell and the author continued their journey, discovering the Zambesi River, and, eventually, the Victoria Falls." - Czech. In the period between 1849 and 1856, his explorations took him to Lake Ngami across the Kalahari Desert, to the Zambezi River, and from there west to the Atlantic Ocean at Loanda (today's Sao Paulo de Loanda, Angola). He turned down a chance to return to England, but entrusted his reports, maps, and letters for transport. The ship went down with all hands except one, and all of Livingstone's papers were lost, forcing him to re-create everything. He followed his track back to Linyanti (in Botswana) and then decided to assess the possibilities of the Zambezi as a highway into the heart of Africa by following it to the Indian Ocean. He reached Victoria Falls in 1855, confirming what he had heard from natives for many years. "Scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight," he wrote. It was the only site in Africa that he named with English words. Livingstone reached Quilimane on the coast of Mozambique on 20 May 1856, but he got there by cutting across a loop of the Zambezi to Tete, inadvertently missing the Kebrabasa Rapids, a drop of about six hundred feet. Hence, he was unaware that the river was not navigable when he arrived in London at the end of the year to promote its potential to the British government. In the meantime, the LMS had informed him that his expeditions were not the kind of gospel work it expected of him, and he resigned the next year. In England, he was feted as a national hero. The present book, written in six months, became an immediate best-seller, with seven editions published in rapid succession." (Delaney). Czech p97; Mendelssohn I, 908-910; Abbey Travel 347; PMM 341.

Qualche lieve fioritura. Bell'esemplare. 'Livingstone's (1813-1873) services to African geography during thirty years are almost unequalled; he covered about a third of the continent from the Cape to the Equator and from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean. Livingstone.[was] one of the great characters of the nineteenth century, embodying all the virtues of the Victorian ages" (P.M.M., n. 341). "Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa, evokes earlier accounts of southern Africa, notably by Philip and Moffat, but Livingstone's book stands out from these by reason of its intellectual breadth. Throughout his sixteen years in Africa, Livingstone had kept himself supplied with reading matter on religion, medicine, natural history, and physical anthropology. He had, moreover, maintained an extensive correspondence with friends made in Glasgow, Ongar, and London. And from 1851, aware of his growing reputation as an explorer, he kept a journal. Here he recorded a miscellany of ruminations and minute observation which attest to a wide-ranging curiosity about the human race and the natural world, and owe much to his medical training. When he came to write his book, he enriched a stirring narrative, told in conversational style, with insights acquired by informed eyes and ears, as well as with shafts of caustic humour" (Oxford DNB). Mendelssohn I, p.908-910. Gay, p.226. Czech, p. 97. Abbey Travel, 347. Hess and Coger 3073 (ed. 1877).

David Livingstone was a Scottish physician, Congregationalist, and pioneer Christian missionary with the London Missionary Society, an explorer in Africa, and one of the most popular British heroes of the late 19th-century Victorian era. 'Missionary Travels' is one of the great classics of African travel. When Livingstone returned to England after sixteen years in Africa, he was immediately awarded the Royal Geographical Society's gold medal. He made two long journeys north try to find a better station for the mission to operate from. He later travelled to Lake Ngami and, most importantly, in the years 1854-6, he made his great crossing of Africa from Luanda on the west coast to Quelimane on the east. All of this is recorded in his account.

Description: 8vo, pp.x, 687, [8 (advertisements)], with a folding wood-engraved frontispiece, a steel-engraved portrait of the author by William Holl after Henry Phillips, 21 wood-engraved plates by Whymper et al., a folding wood-engraved geological section, and two folding lithographic maps by John Arrowsmith with routes added by hand in red (one loose in pocket on lower pastedown, as issued); illustrations in the text; a few isolated spots, loose folding map slightly creased and dust-soiled along one edge, but a good copy in the original brown cloth by Edmonds & Remnants of London with their ticket on rear pastedown; slightly rubbed and bumped, extremities a little frayed, small piece of cloth missing at head of lower joint, hinges split.First edition. 'Livingstone's services to African geography during thirty years are almost unequalled; he covered about a third of the continent from the Cape to the Equator and from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean. He made three great expeditions; in 1853-6 (described in this book), 1858-64 and 1865-73, of which the first and third are the most important. During these years he explored vast regions of central Africa, many of which had never been seen by white men before' (Printing and the Mind of Man). Livingstone's work also alerted Victorian England to the extent of the slave trade in Central and Eastern Africa, and it corrected the popular misconception that the slave trade was dying out in Africa; through his researches and writings the Portuguese slave trade was virtually wiped out in Angola. It was also scientifically important, and provided an accurate account of the tsetse fly (Glossina morsitans) and the effect of its bite on cattle (Livingstone's contemporaries believed that it was harmless to humans, which it may have been at that time; as he comments on p.81, 'a most remarkable feature in the bite of the tsetse is its perfect harmlessness in man and wild animals'). This account on pp.80-83 is complemented by an illustration on p.571, which is repeated as a vignette on the title-page. The illustrations of the first edition of Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa are known in three states: one state has a wood-engraved frontispiece and all of the plates are wood-engraved; another state has a tinted lithographic frontispiece and two lithographic plates (one tinted), all printed by W.West; and a third state has a tinted lithographic frontispiece and two tinted lithographic plates, all printed by Day & Son. The letterpress is also found in two settings: in one the text ends on p.711 and pp.'8*' and '8+' are inserted between pp.8 and 9, and in the other the text ends on p.687 (as here); these settings are found with either a wood-engraved or lithographic frontispiece. All of these permutations of text and plates are known with a Murray catalogue dated 1 November 1857 bound in at the end (present here). Although Abbey suggested that the wood-engraved frontispiece indicated the first state of the plates, since the British Library copyright copy includes it, it seems more likely that Murray employed a number of firms to produce the plates required for the large first edition of twelve thousand copies simultaneously, and that therefore no sequence of priority can be assigned to the different states – certainly, the entry in Murray's estimate book entry for Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa (now in the National Library of Scotland) suggests that the production of the lithographic plates was divided between the two lithographic printing houses of Day and West, with the former printing five thousand sets and the latter three thousand, indicating that some four thousand copies are illustrated throughout with wood-engraved plates (cf.NLS MS 42721, p.219). The author is remembered as a passionate missionary, an explorer, and an ardent opponent of the slave trade. This book is an account of Livingstone's exploration of Lake Ngami, the Zambesi River, and Victoria Falls (or Mosioatunya, the name the waterfall had before Livingstone arrived). The author also recounts his conversations and interactions with the chiefs Sebituane and Sekeletu, and includes some ethnographic details of the African people he met during his travels. Description: First edition. Missionary Travels is one of the emblematic accounts of African exploration in the 19th century and the foundation of the Livingstone legend. He "both embodied and transcended the nineteenth-century tension between religion and science, and it was this which accounted for the scale and complexity of his career in Africa" (ODNB). The book describes the first of his three major expeditions, "in which he followed the Zambezi, discovering Victoria Falls in the process, as well as the Shire and Ruyuma rivers, ranging from Angola in the west to Mozambique in the east. During these years he explored vast regions of central Africa" (PMM). This is Bradlow's variant seven: the frontispiece and plates opposite pages 66 and 225 are wood-engravings by Whymper; the extra leaf after page 8 is absent. As many as 11 variants of the first edition are known and a reliable order of precedence has never been established: it is now accepted that "the only thing that can be said with certainty is that the issue with the extra leaf numbered 8* and 8+ is not the first issue" (Bradlow). The extra leaf contains information on Moffat's mission at Kuruman and on Livingstone's marriage and the upbringing of his children. Provenance: engraved armorial bookplate of the Doughty family on the front pastedown. Abbey, Travel 347; Howgego IV L39; Mendelssohn I, p. 908; Printing and the Mind of Man 341; SABIB III, p. 136. F. LIVINGSTONE, David. Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa; Including a sketch of sixteen years' residence in the interior of Africa.. John Murray, London, 1857.

Price: US$1591.72 + shipping

Description: Large octavo, engraved portrait and 23 plates (including folding frontispiece view), two folding maps by Arrowsmith at the end of the book, and numerous wood engraved illustrations through the text; in a fine contemporary binding of half black morocco and grained cloth sides, spine gilt in compartments, marbled edges and endpapers. The most famous account of African exploration, recording three years spent in the wilderness between 1853-1856. 'Livingstone, one of the great characters of the nineteenth century, embodying all the virtues of the Victorian age, is often remembered more for his qualities as a man than for his achievements as an explorer. Born with no social advantages, it was his courage and boldness of conception, his deep religious feelings and his great powers of endurance that carried him through the trials and hardships of a dedicated life and eventually gained him the honour of burial in Westminster Abbey' (Printing and the Mind of Man, 341). This first edition appeared in various issues. Abbey suggested that those with plates 1 and 8 as wood-engravings -- as in this copy -- preceded those in which they were reprinted as tinted lithographs, while Bradlow argued much the reverse. In any case this very attractive copy has them as wood-engravings and is one of the issues that appeared before the addition of a leaf following p. 8 in which Livingstone later expounded on the subject of his family. Renard seem to have called this variant the third issue, but no reliable order of precedence has been established for the 11 issues that have been identified; Bradlow notes that "the only thing that can be said with certainty is that the issue with the extra leaf numbered 8* and 8+ is not the first issue". . Provenance: With the blind stamp of Walch and Sons, Booksellers, Hobart Town, booksellers in Tasmania from 1846. Mild stains to frontispiece (perhaps due to paper type); otherwise a really fine copy.

Description: First edition, probably from the library of the Irish explorer John King (1838-1872), with a gift inscription on the front flyleaf, "To John King with the sincere respects & best wishes of a New Zealand friend. Christmas 1861", from an unknown New Zealand giver. King was a member of the ill-fated Australian Burke and Wills expedition (1860-1). Missionary Travels is one of the emblematic accounts of African exploration in the 19th century. Livingstone "both embodied and transcended the nineteenth-century tension between religion and science, and it was this which accounted for the scale and complexity of his career in Africa" (ODNB). The extra leaf contains information on Moffat's mission at Kuruman and on Livingstone's marriage and the upbringing of his children. Provenance: King served as the assistant on the Burke and Wills expedition, which initially comprised 19 people, led by Robert O'Hara Burke, alongside William John Wills. The aim was to cross Australia from Melbourne to the Gulf of Carpentaria, approximately 2,000 miles, and return along the same route. Four members reached Carpenteria, and only King survived the return journey, arriving in Melbourne in November 1861. First edition, the issue with the extra leaf numbered 8* and 8+, and with wood-engraved illustrations, one of many parallel issues as the publisher Murray had to give the commission for the production of the plates to various printing establishments at the same time. 'Livingstone's services to African geography during thirty years are almost unequalled; he covered about a third of the continent from the Cape to the Equator and from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean. He made three great expeditions; in 1853-6 (described in this book), 1858-64 and 1865-1873, of which the first and the third are the most important. During these years he explored vast regions of central Africa, many of which had never been seen by white men before. He first discovered the Zambesi River at Secheke and followed it northwards, eventually reaching the west coast of Africa at Luanda, Angola, and the east coast at Quelimane, Mozambique, In 1855 he discovered the great falls of the Zambesi and named them the Victoria Falls. He explored the Zambesi, Shire and Ruyuma rivers and found the salt lake Chilwa and Lake Nyasa [.] The geographical results of his journeys were of supreme importance, and made it possible to fill in great stretches of the maps of Central Africa which hitherto had been blank' (PMM). This remarkable work also alerted Victorian England to the extent of the slave trade in Central and Eastern Africa, and Livingstone's book corrected the popular misconception that the slave trade was dying out in Africa; through his researches and writings the Portuguese slave trade was virtually wiped out in Angola. Provenance: Dampierre bookplate inside front cover, contemporary Paris bookdealer's label in lower outer corner of paste-down. A rare PRESENTATION COPY likely signed in the hand of a John Murray clerk: "Presented to W.H. Wylde from the author" on top of the dedication leaf. W.H. Wylde (1819-1909) was an acquaintance of Livingstone's from the British foreign office. As head of the commercial, consular and Slave Trade Departments of the F.O. from 1859, Wylde received correspondence (and clearly corresponded with) consuls, ambassadors, travelers and diplomats the length and breath of the globe. But it is the West and East Coasts of Africa and in particular the battle to defeat the slave trade (something Livingstone also worked to abolish) and establish legitimate trade in these areas, which dominated Wylde's own career. Durham University has his letter archive which contains correspondence with Livingstone, Layard, Hooker, Burton and other famous explorers. A very ice copy with an excellent presentation.

"Livingstone's contributions to European knowledge of African geography and ethnography remain virtually unequalled. In three major expeditions (1853-1856, 1858-1864 and 1865-1873), he covered a third of the continent, from the Cape to the Equator and from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans, observing and delineating regions previously unknown to white men; he was the first European to explore the Zambesi River, and gave Victoria Falls its present name. Livingstone also brought his powers of observation to bear on the native peoples he encountered, and was inspired by what he saw to entertain not only evangelical notions of their salvation, but political and medican ones as well. He was the first to disclose to the European world the terrible effects of the slave trade upon native populations; the horrors of this ‘running sore of Africa' moved him to campaign actively for its abolition. He also provided an accurate account of the tsetse fly (Glossina morsitans), along with the disease its bite produced in cattle; at the time the fly's bite was thought to be (and perhaps was) harmless to man" (Norman Library). David Livingstone (1813-1873) "became a missionary and was sent to South Africa by the London Missionary Society in 1840. From then onwards his life was devoted to the exploration of central Africa. Although a missionary.he regarded himself more as a pioneer explorer opening up the country for others.
