Description: Pp. [xiv]+416, title page decoration; demy 8vo; bound by Riviere & Son in later red morocco, spine lettered in gilt between raised bands, boards with gilt decoration at centre and gilt ruled edges, the joints lightly rubbed; a.e.g.; marbled endpapers, dentelles ruled in gilt; bookplate of H. Whitfield Carhart, Jr. on upper pastedown, a couple of tiny edge splits, a little faint foxing and occasional slight soiling; printed for John Morphew, London, 1711. First edition, large paper copy. Teerink 2.(1)(b); ESTC N44669; Rothschild 2015. *With the second state foliation recorded by Teerink, although in this copy A8 (which is not present) has not been used as a cancel, so both A and G have only 7 leaves. Rothschild explains that after printing, a decision to omit the final paragraphs of A Discourse of the Contests and Dissentions between the Nobles and the Commons in Athens and Rome 'necessitated replacing G6 and G7(pp. 91-4) by one leaf, for which A8(verso blank) was used, thus leaving a gap in pagination for pp. 92-3'. This first collection of Swift's writings contains 25 works, including some of the 'Bickerstaff' tracts, two poems from theTatler (A Description of the Morning and A Description of a City Shower) and the first authorised printing of Meditations on a Broom-stick. H. Whitfield Carhart, jr. (1914-1977) was chairman of the board of Roosevelt Hospital, New York, and a partner in the Wall Street bank of Brown Brothers Harriman & Company.

[SWIFT, Jonathan].. Miscellanies in Prose and Verse.. London: Printed for John Morphew . 1711., 1711.

Price: US$1604.08 + shipping

Description: 8vo., pp. [14], 416; first few leaves browned but a very good copy in contemporary panelled speckled, calf, rebacked preserving the old spine; modern bookplate.First edition, ordinary paper issue, the very rare first state, with G6-7 preserved (though slashed for cancellation); the cancellans was printed on A8, not here present. This is the first authorized collection of Swift's early work in verse and prose. Twenty-five pieces were assembled by Morphew, with the blessing of the author, including the Meditation upon a Broom-stick, the Account of the Death of Mr. Partridge, and Baucis and Philemon. In later years it was to provide the inspiration, the title, and most of the first volume for the Pope–Swift Miscellanies in Prose and Verse of 1727-32. A last minute decision to omit the final paragraph of 'A Discourse of the Contests and Dissentions in Athens and Rome' (three pages on political corruption), led to the cancellation of G6-7 and its replacement with a single page printed on what was originally A8 (here excised). We can trace only two other copies (British Library and Rothschild) that preserve these leaves, slit as here.Teerink-Scouten 2; Rothschild 2015. Language: English
