A little more than a year after the publication of "Joseph Andrews," he issued by subscription these three volumes. CBEL Vol. 10, pp. 26-27. "The first volume contains a preface. largely autobiographical, followed by some poems.early compositions of the heart rather than the head.The second volume contains more interesting matter: the long Lucianic fragment, "A Journey from this World to the Next." which begins with some of Fielding's happiest satire in the coach-driver of the spirits from earth.In the third volume, he printed the most brilliant piece of work that he had yet achieved, "The Life of Mr. Jonathan Wild the Great." Description: 3 volumes, 8vo, pp [4], [22. subscribers], xxvii, [1], 354: [2], 420, [2]: [10], 421, [1], bound in contemporary full calf, rubbed and a bit worn at spine ends, all joints restored, reinforced or refixed internally or externally with leather ribbon repairs, minor dust soiling, one blank corner chipped, one endpaper replaced, else very clean and sound internally, FIRST EDITION, the subscription issue, printed at Fielding's expense. A 'Second' but trade edition, reprinting this one without the list of subscribers and with 'For the Author' ommitted, appeared shortly after in the same year. Fielding's major undertaking was suported by a long subscription list, including 15 royal paper copies to the Prince of Wales; It includes two of Fielding's major prose works - 'A Journey from this World to the Next' in volume two, and 'The LIfe of Mr Jonathan Wild', which comprises the whole of volume three. For the rest, there are various poetry and prose effusions some of which had been published, though not previously acknowledged as Fielding's works.

Description: The first volume contains Fielding's youthful poems and some essays, preceded by a 22 page "List of Subscrebers" (sic) to the edition. The second volume is the first appearance of "A Journey from this World to the Next, etc.," and the third volume is the first appearance of "The Life of Mr. Jonathan Wild the Great." In addition to these noteworthy first appearances, Fielding's "Miscellanies" is important for the minor pieces it collects under Fielding's name, as the authorship of many of these had not previously been documented. An important work by Henry Fielding (1707-54), an assemblage of poems, essays, satires, dialogues, plays and prose fiction, several examples of which appear here for the first time, including his novel The Life of Mr. Jonathan Wild (one of the great works in the literature of roguery) and A Journey from This World to the Next. Fielding personally supervised the compiling of Miscellanies, and it was his only privately published ("Printed for the Author") work. Contemporary bookplate of George Garnier on the front paste-downs, below which is the modern book label of Louis and Anne Marie Davidson, designed in the style of Reynolds Stone (and perhaps by him).
