Description: Large 8vo. binding, in quarter vellum over green marbled boards; title page printed in black and red; a mildly ex-library copy, with small numbers penned at the bottom of the pastedown and evidence (though no surface loss) of an excision from the endpaper, perhaps a date stamp slip; there is a small number penned in gold (!) at the bottom of the front quarter spine; there are numerous woodcut illustrations in text throughout the book; 63, [1] pages followed by the colophon.~~The book was printed by Robert Gibbings at the Golden Cockerel Press.and completed on the 24th day of March, 1928. . The edition is limited to 375 numbered copies, of which 150 will be issued by by Random House, Inc., New York. This is No.356.". Very Good binding.

Caslon O.F. type. 12 wood engravings by Robert Gibbings. Quarter bound in parchment with marbled boards, gilt lettering on spine. Interior and binding free of imperfections. Copy no. 99 of 375, Bookplate of G. & N. Ingleton on inside cover, and Ingleton library number on green ink stamp on back cover. Also previous owner embossed stamp T.M.R. on flyleaf. [Chanticleer 58; Ransom p. 297, no. 53]. The GOLDEN COCKEREL PRESS was founded by Harold Midgely Taylor in 1920 with the object of publishing new works of literary significance by young authors and to print and publish fine editions of books of established worth. When Mr. Taylor retired in 1924 it was purchased by Robert Gibbins, known as an illustrator and woodcutter (Tomkinson, p .93) "Golden Cockerel books are amongst the most popular and desirable private press items."
