Description: 206 p. Qto. New York & Paris. Publisher's blue cloth hardcover, silver gilt title stamped on front board/spine cover, glossy color illustrated dust cover, illustrated text with 2 original lithographs. There are reproductions in color and monochrome of all the sculptures, objects and constructions that Miro did between 1930 and 1972, except for those works that have been destroyed or lost. Also, a biographical chronology; a bibliography of Miro as a sculptor; and an illustrated catalog giving details of nearly 300 separate works. Measures: 1 W x 11.5 D x 11.25 H inches. About the artist and the work: "Miro's sculpture forms an essential part of his work. Surprisingly, it is as little known as it is badly understood. His first almost abstract "constructions" date from 1930, and they were followed by Surrealist "objects" of great freedom, many of which have not survived. By 1944 sculpture had become a specific means of expression for Miro, who modeled figures and birds that later were cast in monumental dimensions. Since 1967, most of his time has been devoted to executing numerous sculptural assemblages that are marked by a new spirit. He has brought together and combined familiar everyday objects, including junk and handfuls of earth, and created from such unpromising material a procession of fantastic figures and fabulous creatures that are extraordinarily real and full of humor, violence and poetry. In Miro Sculpture, two authors analyze the work and describe in different ways the essential position it occupies today in Miro's oeuvre. Alain Jouffrey, a poet, essayist and art critic, has paid particular attention to Miro's Surrealist period and to the subversive power of the objects and sculptural assemblages. Joan Teixidor, a Catalan writer and an old friend of the artist, has studied Miro's sculpture from an historical, thematic and symbolic point view from its popular roots up to its present flowering." (Dust jacket fly leaf) CONDITION NOTES: Book condition: Fine; light wear not commensurate with age and use (e.g. sporadic light age-toned pages), strong square spine/binding, generally clean and bright text/illustrations). Dust jacket condition: Very good; age-toned at top of rear cover and flaps, starting to curl at edges, a micro tear at lower front board cover, sporadic edge wear at extremities. A beautiful and collectible copy.
