Original black cloth covers are clean, slight bit of bump at bottom edge, spine gilt faded but legible, very slight bit of cocking to the spine causing front board to be just a skosh proud. Original book seller's sticker on inside front cover stuck to the free end paper causing a thinning and lack at that bottom edge at the gutter, as well the first free leaf and the half title have a small crease at bottom fore-edge with a very short tear, otherwise clean and unmarked, binding tight. Paper has a bit of toning. ; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall

Description: 8vo. 222pp. Black cloth hardcover in illustrated jacket. Cover illustration by Stephen Russ. 1st Edition. Jacket's edges are a little worn, with some minor chipping at the head and tail of the spine. There is a closed, 1cm tear to the jacket's front cover. Its spine is a little faded. The book itself is very slightly cocked and its boards a little browned. The contents are clean, clear and bright, with only the most modest suggestion of tanning. Previous owner's signature on first free front endpaper. The jacket is unclipped. Please see pictures for full context. All said, this is a fine example of an important, rare and much sought after first edition in very good condition.Russ's cover illustration is bright and Naipaul's text as clear as could be hoped for. His third novel, Naipaul's early text are extremely collectable.
