Description: This is a fine copy (both the book and the dust jacket) of Salman Rushdie's most admired, celebrated and multi-award winning novel. The spine and boards (part maroon cloth-bound, part silver patterned paper covered) are unmarked (apart from a very thin line of sepia discoloration along the bottom edge of the front and back boards) and there are no scratches, dents or bumps: all edges straight all corners sharp. The text block is square and tightly bound and there is no spotting on the top or fore edges; there is a single small mark on the bottom edge. The colours of the dust jacket artwork and lettering remain strong, bright and distinct; it retains its original gloss, there are no tears, chips or excisions and the publisher's price (£6.95) is still in place. Rushdie, Salman. Midnight's Children. London; Jonathan Cape;, 1981.

Price: US$962.45 + shipping

Description: First edition, first printing of the Booker Prize winning novel. Printed by Jonathan Cape but using American sheets and boards. Very good but marked boards in very good price clipped and ill fitting and thus very scarce first state dustjacket with the usual fading to the spine. (I believe the first batch of dustjackets were slightly too small for the American imports and were replaced). The book was previously the property of a BBC journalist, so the book was probably a review copy, hence the first state dustjacket.

RUSHDIE, Salman.. Midnight's Children.. London Jonathan Cape, 1981.

Price: US$2117.50 + shipping

Description: First UK edition, first impression from American sheets; 8vo; internally fine; publisher's cloth-backed boards, titles to upper board and spine in silver; a very fine copy in the pictorial printed dust jacket, very slight fading to spine; housed in a blue cloth solander box, red morocco label to spine with gilt lettering. 'An extraordinary novel. One of the most important to come out of the English-speaking world in this generation.' (Robert Towers, The New York Times Book Review). The initial UK printing of this book was abandoned at proof when it was discovered that the copy text had been an early draft and not the finished version. (Which being the reason UK proofs of the Cape run were recalled, are of the utmost scarcity and of considerable value). To meet the publication schedule Cape acquired 2500 sets of sheets from the US printing issuing them with a UK title page as in the present example. The Booker of Bookers. A masterpiece.
