Kerouac, Jack. Doctor Sax: Faust Part Three. New York: Grove Press, 1959.

Price: US$150.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: First edition, first printing, Evergreen Book issue. Publisher's paper wrappers, lettered in red, gray, and white over black. Near fine, with light rubbing to spine and extremities, light stain to the bottom edge, date stamp inside the front wrapper. A handsome copy. Kerouac wrote Doctor Sax in 1952 while living with William S. Burroughs in Mexico City, but the novel was not published until 1959 after the success of On the Road (1957). It features the author's fictional alter-ego, Jack Duluoz, who represents a younger Kerouac and makes appearances in subsequent novels. Throughout the text, Kerouac mixes his childhood memories with his youthful fantasies, the two of which have become inextricably intertwined. The central fantasy centers on the mythical Great World Snake, a villainous, slumbering creature who is predicted to devour the whole world upon its awakening. Similarly, the fictional Doctor Sax, a dark yet friendly entity who is hallmarked by his black cape, black slouch hat, and eerie laughter, spends his days preparing a poison that will destroy the snake should it ever awake. Doctor Sax utilizes Kerouac's steam-of-consciousness writing style or "spontaneous prose" that he attempted to insert into On the Road and would later publish in Visions of Cody (1972). Although it was not critically successful, Kerouac maintained that Doctor Sax was "the greatest book I ever wrote, or that I will write." This first Evergreen Book soft cover edition was issued simultaneously with the first hard cover edition.

It's a true 1st American edition, 1st printing of the work published by Grove Press in 1959. The original dust jacket is protected from further wear by a Brodart sleeve. ***************************************Say hello to Bradley the Buyer, the best narcotics agent in the business. Check yourself into the hospital where Dr Benway works - but don't expect adrenalin if you need it (the night porter shot it up for kicks). Meet Dr Fingers' Schafer, the Lobotomy Kid, and his greatest creation, The Complete American De-anxietized Man', a marvel of invasive psychiatry who has been reduced to nothing but a spinal cord. Told by an Ivy League-educated narcotics addict, Naked Lunch' juxtaposes two journeys: the narrator's physical progress from America to North Africa, via Mexico, and a terrifying descent into his own altered consciousness. ***** In this 'Interzone', loosely based on Burroughs' temporary home of Tangier, sex, drugs and murder are the most basic of commodities, and the basest desires have become completely banal. Provocative, influential, morbidly fascinating and mordantly funny, Naked Lunch' takes us on an exhilarating ride through the darkest recesses of the human psyche - a ride which stunned the literary world when first published in the 1950s, and is still guaranteed to shock. ///////////////////////////////////// William Seward Burroughs II (February 5, 1914 August 2, 1997) was an American writer and visual artist. He is widely considered a primary figure of the Beat Generation and a major postmodern author who influenced popular culture and literature. Burroughs wrote eighteen novels and novellas, six collections of short stories and four collections of essays, and five books have been published of his interviews and correspondences; he was initially briefly known by the pen name William Lee. He also collaborated on projects and recordings with numerous performers and musicians, made many appearances in films, and created and exhibited thousands of visual artworks, including his celebrated "Shotgun Art". ///// . . . In 1942, Burroughs enlisted in the U.S. Army to serve during World War II. After being turned down by the Office of Strategic Services and the Navy, he developed a heroin addiction that affected him for the rest of his life, initially beginning with morphine. In 1943, while living in New York City, he befriended Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac. Their mutual influence became the foundation of the Beat Generation, which was later a defining influence on the 1960s counterculture. Burroughs found success with his confessional first novel, Junkie (1953), but is perhaps best known for his third novel, Naked Lunch (1959). Naked Lunch became the subject of one of the last major literary censorship cases in the United States after its US publisher, Grove Press, was sued for violating a Massachusetts obscenity statute. ///// . . . While heavily experimental and featuring unreliable narrators, much of Burroughs' work is semiautobiographical, and was often drawn from his experiences as a heroin addict. . . . ///// Burroughs' work also features frequent mystical, occult, or otherwise magical themes, which were a constant preoccupation for Burroughs, both in fiction and in real life. ////////// The above text was taken from, respectively, Baker & Taylor

Kerouac, Jack. DOCTOR SAX. Grove Press, Inc, New York, 1959.

Price: US$2500.00 + shipping

Description: First printing of this "experimental, florid, and wild" (LOUISVILLE COURIER-JOURNAL, 61) tale of dreams and childhood fantasies - in excellent condition. Written while living with William S. Burroughs in Mexico City, DOCTOR SAX is a prime example of Kerouac's "spontaneous prose" - a style of writing he compared to jazz music. Its setting and theme are unique among Kerouac's works, reflecting his own childhood through a "dark funhouse" mirror rather than the wild adult "years of Beats and bodhisattvas" (Lehman) he is best known for. This copy is in notably sharp condition, exhibiting very little of the dust jacket rubbing normally seen on first printings. 8'' x 5.25''. Original grey cloth boards. Original unclipped ($3.50) dust jacket. 246 pages. Small bookseller label to rear pastedown. Jacket with light wear to spine ends, one tiny closed tear; a touch of sunning to spine. Tight and clean.
