Description: 1892 1st/1st Mark TWAIN Merry Tales Fiction Fact Fancy Civil War Short Stories A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes. Mark Twain Merry Tales is a collection of short stories by Mark Twain, including: "The Private History of a Campaign That Failed" "The Invalid's Story" "Luck" "The Captain's Story" "A Curious Experience" "Mrs. Mc Williams and the Lightning" "Meisterschaft" This collection of captivating tales displays Twain's characteristic energy, imagination, and sense of fun, as well as the darkly satirical edge that marks so much of his work. The best-known story in this collection is "The Private History of a Campaign That Failed," one of the few pieces Twain ever wrote about his experiences in the Civil War. As Anne Bernays writes in her introduction, "unmatched in the care and handling of tone," "The Private History of a Campaign That Failed" is "a merry tale about shattered innocence and slaughter, an antiwar manifesto that is also confession, dramatic monologue.and a romp that gradually turns into atrocity even as we watch. It is a small masterpiece. Item number: #20796 Price: $599 TWAIN, Mark Merry Tales New York: Charles L. Webster, 1892. First Edition. First State.
