Book is tight, square, relatively sharp-cornered and free of major flaws or markings, other than some minor fading to spine and top of front and a small bookseller tag to bottom of pictorial endpapers and attractive ex-libris plate of Edward Bowditch Watson on flyleaf. Book has striking illustrations throughout, from the endpapers to the ten color plates by N.C. Wyeth, and the 24 text illustrations after drawings by Andrew Wyeth under the supervision of N. C. Wyeth. Alas, no DJ but First Edition with 1936 on the copyright page and on other identification, assumed 1st/1st.

Description: This is an exceptional second edition of this book with a single layer of mylar as a dust jacket. The book is in fine shape with both spine crowns and all four corners very strong and sturdy. There are no paste-downs or signatures anywhere to be found. The single-layer mylar is quite bright and almost new, with barely any creasing to its folds. All pen-and-ink drawings are intact and quite pleasing to the eye. Original green clothed boards with silver lettering. The book deals with Thoreau's conversations with the local townspeople he met on his frequent walk-abouts. 255 pages.

A small quarto measuring 9 3/8 by 6 1/4 inches with the cloth at the heel of the spine very slightly rubbed. In a very good+ unclipped dust jacket (no price) with 1/16 inch deep chipping across the upper edge of the spine area which is tanned and slight tanning around the outside edges of the panels with small nicks at the corners of the panels over the tips of the boards. With is a review copy with the publisher's review card laid-in at the front of the book. Illustrated with ten full color plates by N. C. Wyeth. Edited and with an introduction by F. H. Allen. A very handsome copy of a very uncommon title with no prior owner's marks, names or bookplates. 255 pages including an index. (BAL 20252)
