Hemingway, Ernest. MEN WITHOUT WOMEN. Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1927.

Price: US$2000.00 + shipping

Description: First edition of Hemingway's second short-story collection, a beautiful copy in the second-issue dust jacket (within a month of the first issue). Hemingway began writing stories in this collection the same year that he published his first short story collection, IN OUR TIME - but in the intervening years, his career would change dramatically. Fresh off the heels of THE SUN ALSO RISES (1926), MEN WITHOUT WOMEN sold out its first printing (and much of its second) within a month. While a number of the stories here first appeared in publications like THE LITTLE REVIEW and THE NEW REPUBLIC, MEN WITHOUT WOMEN also includes four never before published stories: "Ten Indians"; "A Pursuit Race"; "Now I Lay Me"; and "A Simple Enquiry," which explores a homosexual attraction between two men on the front in Italy during World War I. 7.5'' x 5.25''. Original black cloth, gilt printed title labels on front board and spine. In original unclipped ($2.00) dust jacket with orange bands, blurbs printed within top and bottom bands of front panel. Yellow pictorial endpapers; fore-edge uncut. [12], 232 pages. Book with touch of rubbing to spine ends. Jacket one short closed tear to front panel, spine somewhat toned, only shallow chipping at spine head.

HEMINGWAY, Ernest.. Men Without Women.. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1927, 1927.

Price: US$9555.32 + shipping

Description: First edition, first printing, of Hemingway's collection of 14 stories in which, as noted by the blurb, "the softening feminine influence is almost wholly absent - either through training, discipline, death, or situation". The volume was the author's second collection of short stories. Reviewing the book in the New York Times on 16 October 1923, Percy Hutchison claimed "Mr Hemingway shows himself a master craftsman in the short story". Grissom provides details of five dust jackets, of which the present example is the "Jacket B" version used for the first printing ("Jacket A" being a rarely-seen trial version). Grissom's bibliography queries the long-held view that copies must weight 15.5 oz or more and have an unbroken page number 3 to be one of the first copies of the first impression. Nonetheless, this copy does have these attributes, weighing 15.7 oz and with the perfect "3". Grissom A.7.1.a; Hanneman A7a. Octavo. Original black cloth (Grissom's A binding), gold labels printed in black to spine and front cover, yellow decorated endpapers, top edge red, bottom edge trimmed, fore edge untrimmed. With dust jacket. Couple of nicks to cloth at spine ends, one corner gently bumped, title label on front cover rubbed, front inner hinge split, visible at half-title, but sound; jacket somewhat rubbed and toned, short closed tears at folds, couple of small chips, unclipped: a very good copy in like jacket.
