Description: Very Good in a Good jacket, unclipped ($2.50), generally rubbed and creased, a few shallow closed tears, stains at the back panel. Quarter grey cloth with maroon cloth on the boards. Firmly bound with a slight forward lean, faded blue top stain, toned at the endpapers, clean otherwise. Hersey's first book, a work about General Douglas MacArthur and the defense of Bataan during World War II.

B/w photo taped in on front end paper, with author's name taped above (probably from a dust jacket of another of his books). Signed by author on the end paper under this photo. End papers glue stained. Top edge blue/green but with a splash. SIGNED and inscribed by author on the title page: For X X: The reason this book was hard to find is that many [underscored] years go I asked Knopf to let it go out of print. Why? Description: First Edition; A Near Fine book in a Near Fine dust jacket. SIGNED, inscribed, and dated by the author to the front free paper. A remarkably well preserved copy of this account of General MacArthur and the defense of Bataan, written and published just months after the surrender of Bataan and Corregidor. This copy is apparently inscribed to Alfred A. Knopf Jr. (nickname Pat), the son of the founder of the Knopf publishing company; Alfred Jr. was a bomber pilot during WWII, flying over 100 missions during the war; later, he founded the Atheneum Publishing Company. This copy is in near fine condition showing only a mild darkening to the spine and minor offsetting to the pastedowns and endpapers; housed in a beautiful crisp and bright near fine jacket that shows only a mild sunning to the spine and some light rubbing to the front flap fold and corners, else fine. An important and unique addition to any WWII/Pacific Theater collection. Not remaindered, not price clipped, not ex-library; in a protective Mylar sleeve and will ship carefully wrapped in a sturdy box.
