Description: ix+327 pages. Small octavo (7 3/4" 5 1/4") bound in original publisher's red cloth with gilt lettering to spine and blind stamped title to cover. First American edition. Barnstaple, a burnt out journalist, decides to go on holiday and leave the rat race behind. He leaves his family at home and hits the road. His car along with several others are miraculous transported 3,000 years into an alternate future. The world he lands in, a veritable utopia, has a history very much like his own but for small details. Mankind has left behind its governments and religions for good or ill. Each person lives a life of their own choosing. Barnstaple and the occupants of the other cars are quarantined because of the illnesses they have unwittingly transported to this alternate future. During the quarantine his fellow time travelers decide that they can conquer this idyllic world and live like kings. Barnstaple must decide if he will join them or betray his own kind to protect utopia. 'Men Like Gods' was the first novel of its kind a blend of science fiction and fantasy. Its influence forever changed genre fiction creating the sub-genre science fantasy. Condition: Corners bumped, spine stained, lacks end papers, last page detached else fair.

Description: This is a first American edition. Measuring approximately7.75" x 5.25" with 327 numbered pages. This book is in good plus condition. Moderate bumping and tearing to both ends of spine. Moderate staining to spine and both boards. Minor staining to all edges of textblock. "Ex-libris the Birger Engstroms 1924" written on front pastedown. Men Like Gods is set in the summer of 1921. Its protagonist is Mr. Barnstaple (his first name is either Alfred or William), a journalist working in London and living in Sydenham. Binding is tight, solid and square, page edges have some minor age wear, but interior text is unmarked and bright. A very good copy of this early and rare sci fi book.

Description: This is the Macmillan first US edition. "Published January, 1923" on its copyright page, and publisher's original "Price $2.00" on its jacket's front flap. This book is in near fine condition, marred only by a bump on its covers' back bottom corner. Its binding is sound and square, with no spine crease. Covers are unmarked and otherwise unworn, with bright gilt titles on its spine. Pages are unmarked and unworn, with no apparent age toning. Its dust jacket, now protected by a removable mylar cover, is in very good condition: mostly whole except for some tiny chips in the top of its spine, with traces of wear on the bottom of its spine and the bottom of its front flap fold, plus a slightly faded spine, and some light soiling on its spine and back, but otherwise unmarked. I will ship this book in a moisture proof zip-loc bag, padded in bubble wrap, inside a sturdy box to assure it reaches its new owner in the same condition as my description.

The UK Cassell edition was published in January 1923. the same month Macmillan's "advance copy" was sent to booksellers to "be of service to you in building up your advance orders." According to the publisher's tipped in printed slip, "no copies of MEN LIKE GODS are to be sold until May 22, 1923." A late, but major Wells fantasy. Twenty centuries in the future a tourist cuts his hand in the ruins of the "Ages of Confusion." In a fever induced dream he experiences " a whole life in that old world."
