Description: ix+327 pages. Small octavo (7 3/4" 5 1/4") bound in original publisher's red cloth with gilt lettering to spine and blind stamped title to cover. First American edition. Barnstaple, a burnt out journalist, decides to go on holiday and leave the rat race behind. He leaves his family at home and hits the road. His car along with several others are miraculous transported 3,000 years into an alternate future. The world he lands in, a veritable utopia, has a history very much like his own but for small details. Mankind has left behind its governments and religions for good or ill. Each person lives a life of their own choosing. Barnstaple and the occupants of the other cars are quarantined because of the illnesses they have unwittingly transported to this alternate future. During the quarantine his fellow time travelers decide that they can conquer this idyllic world and live like kings. Barnstaple must decide if he will join them or betray his own kind to protect utopia. 'Men Like Gods' was the first novel of it’s kind a blend of science fiction and fantasy. Its protagonist is Mr. Barnstaple (his first name is either Alfred or William), a journalist working in London and living in Sydenham. Description: This is the Macmillan first US edition. "Published January, 1923" on its copyright page, and publisher's original "Price $2.00" on its jacket's front flap. This book is in near fine condition, marred only by a bump on its covers' back bottom corner. Its binding is sound and square, with no spine crease. Covers are unmarked and otherwise unworn, with bright gilt titles on its spine. Pages are unmarked and unworn, with no apparent age toning. Its dust jacket, now protected by a removable mylar cover, is in very good condition: mostly whole except for some tiny chips in the top of its spine, with traces of wear on the bottom of its spine and the bottom of its front flap fold, plus a slightly faded spine, and some light soiling on its spine and back, but otherwise unmarked. I will ship this book in a moisture proof zip-loc bag, padded in bubble wrap, inside a sturdy box to assure it reaches its new owner in the same condition as my description.
