Orig. purple-brown vertical fine-ribbed cloth by Westley & Co., boards and spine blocked in blind, spines lettered in gilt; cloth sl. darkened but overall a good-plus copy. Ownership inscriptions of H. E. Read, 4.8.32., in both vols. Parrish & Miller p4. Collins's first published book was this biography of his father, the celebrated painter; WWC broke off from Antonina to write it. The publishers' catalogue in vol. I is dated August 1848, (as Wolff's copy) rather than April as in Parrish.

This personal biography was his first published work, published just one year after his father's death.Bookplate of W. A. Externally, the front board of Volume II is dampstained, cloth is lifting to the joint and extremities. Very light rubbing to the front joint of Volume II. Only a few small marks to the boards. Bookplate to the front paste downs, small chip to the bookplate to Volume II, resulting in a small amount of wear to the recto of the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound.
